Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the tips of Phlebodium Davana fronds turn brown? It’s almost always due to hard water or dry air — spray daily with filtered or rainwater at room temperature to stop this on the sensitive fine fronds.
Is Phlebodium Davana suitable for a bathroom? Yes, it’s actually the ideal spot — the natural humidity after showers perfectly mimics its tropical habitat and keeps the fine fronds fresh and dense without extra misting.

💙 Light bluish foliage • ✨ Fine and airy fronds • 🌑 Tolerates partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 2 sizes available
The Phlebodium 'Davana', also known as the bluish fern, is a tropical epiphytic fern native to the forests of South America. Unlike the Blue Star with its broad, velvety fronds, the Davana variety features lighter bluish foliage with fine, delicately cut fronds — an airy and slender habit that brings a unique lightness and delicacy to plant arrangements.
Non-toxic to pets and comfortable in partial shade, it is perfect for homes with pets looking for a graphic fern in low-light spaces — a rare combination in the non-toxic plant selection, where most decorative ferns are absent.
Which Phlebodium variety to choose?
Verdeia offers two Phlebodium with very distinct silhouettes:
- Phlebodium 'Davana' (this plant) — light bluish foliage with fine, delicately cut fronds, airy and slender habit. The more delicate and refined of the two varieties.
- Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' — intense blue-green foliage with broad, wavy, and slightly velvety fronds, more compact and dense habit. The choice for a more intense color and a more imposing volume.
Light & placement
Phlebodium Davana thrives in soft to medium indirect light — its fine fronds are more sensitive to direct sunlight than those of the Blue Star and fade quickly if exposed for long periods. Its tolerance to partial shade makes it a good option for low-light spaces.
- Light: bright indirect to partial shade — protected from direct sun that burns the delicate fronds.
- Ideal locations: bright bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, dim living room — the bathroom benefits from natural humidity after showers.
- Temperature: 18 to 24 °C, without sudden changes.
- Humidity: high (60-80%) — mist regularly or place on a tray of moist clay pebbles.
If the foliage gradually turns green losing its bluish tint, move the plant to a slightly brighter spot — this is the most reliable sign of insufficient light for Phlebodium.
Watering & care
Phlebodium Davana is an epiphytic fern — its roots absorb ambient moisture as well as water from the substrate. Keep the substrate slightly moist at all times, never soggy, as with other tropical indoor ferns.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in autumn-winter.
- Misting: daily or every 2 days — its fine fronds dry faster than the thick fronds of the Blue Star.
- Water: non-calcareous at room temperature — calcareous water browns the tips of delicate fronds.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate for ferns or orchids.
- Fertilizer: a liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half, once a month from April to September.
A tray filled with moist clay pebbles under the pot creates a constant humid microclimate around the fine fronds — this is the most effective method to maintain a tropical atmosphere without risking root rot.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The lightness and fineness of the Phlebodium Davana fronds make it an ideal contrast plant — it brings airiness and delicacy to fern and trailing plant arrangements.
- For a very graphic epiphytic fern arrangement, pair Phlebodium Davana with a Platycerium bifurcatum — the fine bluish fronds of Davana contrast with the sculptural antler-shaped fronds of Platycerium for a very original and graphic epiphytic fern duo.
- For an arrangement with very varied textures, combine it with a Nephrolepis Green Lady and an Asplenium Parvati — the airy bluish of Davana, the bright cascading green of Nephrolepis, and the soft lacy green of Asplenium create three very distinct ferns with the same tolerance for partial shade.
- For a non-toxic tropical arrangement, pair it with a Maranta Fascinator and a Calathea warscewiczii — all three plants share the same tolerance for partial shade and are non-toxic to pets.
- In a matte white or very light gray ceramic decorative pot, the cool and neutral tones complement the bluish tint of the fronds — choose a matte ceramic decorative pot without pattern so the delicate color of the foliage remains the only decorative accent.
Verdeia tips
- Mist the fronds daily in heated indoor spaces: the fine fronds of Davana dry out at the tips much faster than the thick fronds of other ferns — daily misting in winter is essential to keep the foliage’s delicacy intact.
- Remove yellowed fronds at the base as soon as they appear: a yellowed frond never greens again and consumes energy from new shoots — cutting it cleanly at the base keeps the plant dense and encourages new bluish fronds to grow.
- Repot every 2 years in spring with a light and airy substrate: a mix for ferns or orchids enriched with perlite ensures optimal drainage while maintaining root moisture — the steps of indoor plant repotting fully apply here.
