Photinia fraseri 'Carré Rouge' is a French selection whose young shoots emerge a deeper red and retain their colour noticeably longer than those of classic cultivars. A hybrid originating from species native to East Asia, it is the most vigorous of the patio shrubs with colourful foliage.
Its distinctive feature is its resistance: 'Carré Rouge' was selected for its tolerance to entomosporium leaf spot, the foliar disease that regularly disfigures Photinia with purple spots and leaf drop. Its leaves are also larger and its growth habit more vigorous than those of 'Little Red Robin'.
Which standard Photinia should you choose?
Two cultivars trained on stems, with complementary characteristics:
- Photinia 'Carré Rouge' (this plant) — more intense and longer-lasting red, large leaves, resistant to leaf diseases. The most vigorous version.
- Photinia 'Little Red Robin' — dwarf cultivar with small leaves and vermilion-red shoots (H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most compact version.
Exposure & location
The intensity of the red depends directly on sunlight. In the shade, young shoots emerge brownish, and the contrast with the mature foliage almost entirely disappears.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — at least 4 hours of direct sun for a vivid red.
- Location: terrace, entrance, pathway, balcony — sheltered from cold, drying winds in winter.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -15 °C.
- Soil type: well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic — Photinia does not tolerate highly alkaline soils well.
Leaves that yellow between the veins indicate soil that is too alkaline: adding ericaceous soil when repotting provides a lasting solution.
Watering & care
Its tolerance of leaf diseases does not replace good practices: watering at the base remains the best prevention, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: moderate — once or twice a week in summer for this pot volume, and much less in winter. Always water at the base, never over the foliage.
- Drainage: essential — use a well-draining substrate and never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Pruning: after each flush, in June and September — this triggers a new wave of red leaves.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they ruin the standard form.
- Fertilizer: apply shrub fertilizer once at the beginning of spring.

Decor ideas & plant pairings
The rich red color and large leaves make it more prominent than ‘Little Red Robin’: on a terrace, it takes center stage rather than playing a supporting role.
- For a Photinia duo, pair it with ‘Little Red Robin’ — two intensities of red and two leaf sizes in the same color palette.
- For a color contrast, place an ‘Azura’ Eucalyptus beside it — the eucalyptus’s blue-gray and the Photinia’s red create the sharpest contrast between two evergreens.
- To frame an entrance, place two identical ones on either side of the door, in matching containers — symmetry works year-round with an evergreen.
- To extend the greenery, complement it with a ‘Etna’ Cherry Laurel — two evergreens from the same botanical family, one plain and the other colorful.
Against a light-colored wall, the red of the shoots stands out with an intensity that the deep green mature foliage no longer provides once the color has faded.

- Prune after each flush to revive the red: a light trim in June and then in September produces a new wave of colorful leaves each time. This is the only way to extend the effect throughout the beautiful season.
- Avoid calcareous soils: Photinia develops yellowing between the veins in overly alkaline substrate. A neutral to slightly acidic mix, with a little ericaceous compost when repotting, solves the problem permanently.
