The Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' is a dwarf lilac that opens mauve-lilac panicles in May, with a distinctive fragrance as intense as that of the common lilac. Native to northern China, it is the most fragrant of the patio shrubs in the catalogue.
Its special quality is that it corrects the common lilac's drawbacks: it reaches only 1.50 metres instead of 4 to 6, does not sucker, and resists powdery mildew, which whitens the foliage of classic varieties every summer. This makes it suitable for growing in a pot on a balcony, where an ordinary lilac quickly becomes unmanageable.
Light & placement
The lilac requires full sun to flower abundantly. In partial shade, the shrub grows well but flowering becomes sparser year after year.
- Light: full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun per day, which is essential for dense flowering.
- Placement: patio, entrance, walkway, balcony — near a passageway so you can enjoy its fragrance.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -30 °C — it is one of the most cold-resistant shrubs in the catalogue.
- Soil type: well-drained and rather alkaline — the lilac is one of the few shrubs that prefers alkaline soil.
Unlike magnolia or hydrangea, the lilac appreciates alkaline soil: there is no need to seek out soft water or acidic substrate.
Watering & care
The lilac tolerates drought well once established but remains sensitive to standing water. A well-drained substrate solves the problem, and the foliage always signals a problem before it gets worse.
- Watering: moderate — once or twice a week in summer for this pot size, and very sparingly once the leaves have fallen.
- Drainage: essential — never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Pruning: just after flowering, in June — the lilac forms its buds in summer for the following year.
- Spent flowers: cut them off as soon as they dry, preventing the shrub from producing seeds and encouraging the next flowering.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they ruin the standard form.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for flowering shrubs, once at the beginning of spring.
'Palibin' sometimes flowers again in September, with a more discreet second bloom, provided the May flowers were cut off as soon as they faded.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Fragrance is this plant's main appeal: on a patio or near a door, it spreads widely for three weeks in May.
- For continuous spring colour, pair it with Magnolia 'Susan' — the magnolia flowers in April-May, and the lilac takes over straight afterwards.
- To fill the winter space, place a Bay laurel on a standard beside it — its evergreen foliage holds the space from November to March, when the lilac is bare.
- For a fragrant duo, add a Rosemary on a standard — two very different fragrances, one floral and fleeting, the other aromatic and lasting.
- To enhance the pot, a terracotta or natural-fibre container is a perfect choice, as the lilac has no acidity requirements.
The cut panicles last a week in a vase and scent an entire room: it is one of the few patio shrubs that also provides cut flowers.
Verdeia tips
- Prune immediately after flowering: the lilac forms its buds from July for the following year. Autumn or spring pruning removes all upcoming flowers. June is the only suitable window.
- Cut off spent flowers as soon as they dry: if left in place, they encourage the shrub to produce seeds at the expense of the following year's buds. This is the step that doubles flowering from one year to the next.
- Do not try to acidify the substrate: unlike most flowering shrubs, the lilac prefers alkaline soil. Ericaceous compost and rainwater are unnecessary, or even counterproductive.
