This Tillandsia is suspended by a thread at the centre of a matte black rectangular metal frame placed on a flat base, keeping it levitating without any contact with the support. A genus native to the dry regions of Central and South America, it joins the air plants in the catalogue.
Its distinctive feature lies in its way of life: Tillandsia are epiphytes; they have no feeding roots and absorb water and minerals directly through their leaves via fine, absorbent scales. The plant supplied forms a dense ball of multiple rosettes with red-tinged tips.
Which Tillandsia should you choose?
The catalogue brings together several Tillandsia, either alone or displayed on a support:
- Tillandsia in a metal frame (this plant) — ball of rosettes suspended in a black rectangular frame on a base. The most graphic presentation.
- Tillandsia on a metal ring — black circular ring on a stand (H30 cm | Ø17 cm). The most minimalist version.

Light & placement
Tillandsia requires bright but filtered light. Direct sun burns the tips of the leaves, while insufficient light causes the clump to fade and slows its growth until it stops.
- Light: bright indirect light — one or two metres from an east- or west-facing window.
- Placement: shelf, console table, desk, bright bathroom — the frame can be placed anywhere without the constraints of a container.
- Temperature: 15 to 28 °C — minimum 10 °C, perfectly tolerant of the dry air of heated interiors.
- Support: no substrate, no pot — the plant lives solely on ambient air and watering.
A bright bathroom is the ideal location: shower steam replaces some of the misting, and the plant benefits from the ambient humidity it enjoys.
Watering & care
Caring for an air plant is nothing like caring for a potted plant: there is no substrate to monitor and no mix to prepare, only water applied directly to the foliage.
- Misting: two to three times a week, using non-limescale water and wetting the entire tuft.
- Soaking: alternatively, fully immerse it for 20 to 30 minutes once a week in non-limescale water.
- Drying: essential — shake the plant upside down after each soaking and let it air-dry before putting it back in place.
- Water: non-limescale water is essential — filtered, rainwater, or water left to stand for 24 hours. Limescale clogs the absorbent scales.
- Fertilizer: very diluted fertilizer for air plants, once a month from April to September.
- Cleaning: no polishing product, as it would clog the scales and prevent absorption.
It is the water retained at the heart of the rosettes that kills a Tillandsia, never dryness: drying it upside down after each watering is the most important step.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The frame turns the plant into a displayed object: the green sphere floats within an empty rectangle, creating a play of solid and empty space that would be impossible with a pot.
- For a duo of metal supports, pair it with the Tillandsia on a ring — two black geometries, one rectangular and the other circular, on the same shelf.
- For a contrast in textures, place a Pogonatherum 'Monica' with slender, arching stems beside it — two linear types of foliage, one spherical and the other forming an upright tuft.
- For a mineral composition, surround it with assorted mini cacti — the shared desert character of these two families is immediately apparent.
- For a clean look, place the frame on a light, uncluttered surface: the matte black metal is best appreciated without a busy background.
The flat base allows you to place the frame on a narrow shelf; the plant can be detached from the wire in a few seconds for soaking, then put back in place.
Verdeia tips
- Dry it upside down after every soak: water that stagnates between the tightly packed leaves at the center causes the rosette to rot from the inside within a few days. Shaking the plant and letting it drain upside down for an hour is enough to prevent this.
- Never use hard tap water: limescale settles on the absorbent scales of the leaves and gradually clogs them, cutting the plant off from its water source. Filtered or rainwater is essential in the long term.
- Keep the offsets that appear at the base: each rosette flowers only once and then produces side offsets. Leaving them in place thickens the ball year after year; removing them allows you to propagate the plant.
