The Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) is an exceptional small tree. Its finely cut foliage changes color throughout the seasons — from tender green or golden in spring, to deep greens in summer, before blazing in red, orange, and purple in autumn. A living work of art, perfectly suited for container growing.

Our Acer palmatum varieties

Acer palmatum 'Orange Dream' is one of the brightest: its foliage emerges yellow-orange in spring, turns golden green in summer, then bursts into bright orange in autumn. It offers the most color variations throughout the year. Acer palmatum 'Garnet' belongs to the dissectum group (very finely cut leaves): its deep purple, almost garnet foliage cascades in a compact weeping form. It stays red all season. Acer palmatum 'Going Green' is the most vigorous: its bright green, palmate, and elegant foliage takes on spectacular red-orange hues in autumn. Upright habit and balanced silhouette.

Japanese maple in a pot: a natural bonsai

Acer palmatum is one of the best trees suited for container growing. Naturally compact and slow-growing, it does not exceed 1.5 to 2 meters in a pot — compared to 4 to 6 meters in the ground. Choose a pot at least 30 cm in diameter with good drainage. A well-draining, slightly acidic substrate (a mix of ericaceous soil, potting soil, and perlite) is ideal. Repot every 2 to 3 years in early spring, before bud break. Check out our article when and how to repot and our guide choosing the right pot.

Light exposure: partial shade and protection

The Japanese maple prefers partial shade, especially in warm climates. Direct afternoon sun in summer can burn leaf edges (especially on light-leaved varieties like Orange Dream). The ideal location: morning sun, afternoon shade, or filtered light all day. Protect it from strong, drying winds that damage the delicate foliage. For shaded balconies, the maple is a perfect choice — also explore our plants for shaded balconies collection.

Care and watering

The Japanese maple likes fresh but never waterlogged soil. In pots, water regularly in summer — sometimes daily during heatwaves — allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, reduce watering significantly as the tree is dormant and leafless. The maple does not require regular pruning: simply remove dead or poorly placed branches at the end of winter. Avoid pruning during sap flow (spring) as wounds bleed heavily. Our complete watering guide helps you find the right rhythm.

Hardiness and winter care in pots

Acer palmatum is hardy down to -15°C to -20°C in the ground. In pots, roots are more exposed to frost: protect the container with a frost cloth or group your pots against a sheltered wall. Young spring shoots are sensitive to late frosts — a temporary protective cover can save them. Discover our other hardy shrubs in the hardy and resistant collection.

Pairing the Japanese maple on a balcony

The Japanese maple fits into a zen and minimalist atmosphere or a lusher urban garden. Pair it with Fargesia bamboo for the background, grasses like Carex for texture, and a Camellia japonica for complementary winter blooms. Mosses or small ferns at the base of the maple complete the Japanese-inspired scene. Explore our balconies and terraces, mini urban shrubs and perennials, and outdoor plants collections.
