Fargesia is the ideal bamboo for urban living: non-invasive, it stays where you plant it without encroaching on your neighbor’s balcony. Compact, hardy, and evergreen, it adds a touch of exotic charm all year round — in a pot on a terrace, in a planter on a balcony, or planted in the ground as a privacy hedge.

Why choose a non-invasive bamboo?

Running bamboos (Phyllostachys, Pseudosasa…) are known for their invasive growth: their underground rhizomes spread throughout all available space and can damage terraces, foundations, or neighboring pots. Fargesia is a clumping bamboo — it grows in a compact clump without sending out running rhizomes. This guarantees a controlled bamboo, perfectly suited for container growing and small urban spaces. Also discover our other outdoor plants suitable for container life.

Our Fargesia varieties

Fargesia Rufa (umbrella bamboo) is the most popular variety: its dense, drooping foliage forms a natural screen perfect for creating privacy on a balcony or terrace. It reaches 2 to 3 meters at maturity and tolerates temperatures down to -26°C. Fargesia 'Moontears' Boobux is a more compact and bushy selection, ideal for small spaces: its dense, rounded shape makes it a true ornamental bamboo shrub, perfect in pots of 30 cm or larger.

Fargesia in a pot: the perfect privacy screen for balconies

Grown in a planter, Fargesia forms a dense green curtain that protects against wind, prying eyes, and sun. Choose a pot at least 30 cm in diameter with good drainage. Bamboo is thirsty: in summer, daily watering may be necessary, especially in full sun. In winter, reduce watering but never let the soil dry out completely. Our complete watering guide helps you find the right rhythm. Also explore our decorate my balcony collection for more ideas.

Light and location

Fargesia is one of the few bamboos that tolerates partial shade well, making it suitable for north- or east-facing balconies. It also tolerates full sun provided it is well watered. Just avoid locations exposed to strong, drying winds that can damage the foliage. For very sunny balconies, also check out our plants for sunny balconies collection; for shaded balconies, our plants for shaded balconies selection.

Care and hardiness

Fargesia is a very hardy plant that withstands temperatures down to -26°C for the Rufa variety. In pots, protect the roots during prolonged frost with a frost cloth around the planter. Pruning is not essential but helps control height and densify the clump: cut the oldest canes at the base in spring. Repotting every 2 to 3 years into a larger pot with rich soil revives its vigor. Read our article when and how to repot for the technique.

Pairing Fargesia on a balcony

Fargesia pairs very well with other outdoor plants to create a complete green balcony. Combine it with climbers like star jasmine or clematis to dress walls, and add compact perennials or fruit and aromatic plants in pots for a balcony that is both beautiful and productive.
