Dracaena marginata — Madagascar Dragon Tree
The Dracaena marginata, also called Madagascar dragon tree, is a graphic and slender plant, famous for its thin green ribbon-like leaves edged in red. With its elegant and architectural silhouette, it embodies the ideal modern tropical touch for urban interiors.
Easy to care for, resilient, and air-purifying, it naturally cleans the air while adding a light verticality to your decor. A plant that is both decorative, robust, and full of style.
Exposure & Location
The Dracaena marginata thrives in bright to medium light but without harsh direct sunlight. It adapts very well to apartment living, even in less bright rooms.
- Ideal: well-lit room, near an east or west-facing window.
- Avoid: direct full sun which can burn the leaf tips.
- Perfect location: living room, office, or entryway to elegantly structure the space.
Verdeia tip: clean its long leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine and promote photosynthesis.
Watering & Care
- Watering: moderate — let the soil dry out a few centimeters before watering again.
- Frequency: about every 10 to 15 days depending on ambient temperature.
- Overwatering: main enemy of Dracaena — ensure good pot drainage.
- Care: remove dry leaves at the base and lightly prune to maintain a nice shape.
- Level: easy — perfect for those starting with tropical plants.
In winter, reduce watering frequency and avoid sudden temperature changes.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
With its vertical habit and thin leaves, the Dracaena marginata adds a design and airy touch to any interior. Its exotic look pairs well with both modern atmospheres and natural decor.
- Visual look: graphic plant, perfect for minimalist and bright interiors.
- To pair with: Monstera deliciosa or Ficus elastica to create a contrasting tropical composition.
- Ideal pot: large matte ceramic or natural fiber pot to soften its verticality.
- Where to place: living room corner, near a bay window, or paired with a trailing plant.
Pair it with natural materials (light wood, jute, rattan) to emphasize its “contemporary jungle” side.
Verdeia Tips
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years, in spring, into a slightly larger pot.
- Substrate: well-drained universal potting soil mixed with some perlite or sand.
- Dull leaves: sign of lack of light — move it to a brighter space.
- Brown tips: often due to dry air — lightly mist or place a water pebble nearby.
Bonus: Dracaena is an air-purifying plant, ideal for cleaning the air in urban interiors.
