Humata tyermannii – "Bear's Foot" Fern
🌿 Urban jungle • 🐾 Pet safe • 💧 Easy care • 🧘 Soothing • ✨ Fuzzy rhizomes
The Humata tyermannii, nicknamed the "Bear's Foot" fern, is a rare and fascinating tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. Its deep green fronds emerge from thick, furry rhizomes resembling bear paws — an unusual and captivating detail.
Elegant, compact, and easy to care for, it brings a soothing and exotic touch to any urban interior. Its soft foliage and natural textures make it a perfect ally for zen, bohemian, or contemporary decor.
Light & Placement
- Soft indirect light or partial shade, no direct sunlight.
- Prefers slightly humid environments (bathroom, living room, office).
- Ideal temperature: 18–25 °C, protected from cold drafts.
- Avoid direct heat sources like radiators.
Verdeia Tip: place it in a bright and calm spot where its fuzzy rhizomes can naturally spread over the edge of the planter cover.
Watering & Care
- Water about once a week, when the soil starts to dry on the surface.
- Keep the substrate slightly moist, without excess water.
- Reduce watering frequency in winter.
- Regularly mist the fronds to maintain their freshness.
- Mild fertilizer for green plants once a month in spring and summer.
Verdeia Advice
- Humidity: place a bed of moist clay pellets under the planter cover to maintain good humidity.
- Cleaning: gently dust the fronds with a damp cloth to preserve their shine.
- Repotting: about every 2 years, in a rich and well-draining mix (potting soil + peat + perlite).
- Position: avoid very dark areas — soft lighting promotes foliage density.
- Observation: if the fronds yellow, slightly reduce watering: the plant prefers aerated soil.
Decor Ideas & Pairings
- Beautiful hanging or on a shelf to highlight its fuzzy rhizomes.
- Pair it with a Phlebodium ‘Blue Star’ or an Asparagus setaceus for an urban tropical forest vibe.
- Choose a light, beige, or natural terracotta planter cover to emphasize the texture contrast.
- Ideal for bathrooms, where it benefits from natural humidity.
