Frequently Asked Questions
Can Aloe vera grow on a sunny balcony? Yes, it’s actually its ideal spot during the warm season — provided you bring it inside before the first cool nights below 10 °C and gradually reintroduce it to direct sunlight after winter indoors.
Why do Aloe vera leaves develop reddish hues? It’s a natural sun protection mechanism — in strong light, the leaves produce reddish or golden pigments that protect them without harming the plant, a decorative effect and a sign of good exposure.

🌵 Tender green fleshy leaves • 🌞 Full sun • 💧 Water every 2-3 weeks • 🏜️ Drought tolerant • 🏙️ 8 sizes available
Aloe vera is a legendary and resilient succulent native to warm and arid regions — found on all tropical and subtropical continents, it has been cultivated for millennia for its tender green fleshy leaves that store water, allowing it to endure long dry periods without damage. Its rosette shape, thick slightly serrated leaves, and golden highlights in the sun make it a graphic and sculptural plant, as decorative as it is indestructible.
Among the most resilient plants in the catalog and in the plants for bright light, Aloe vera is one of the few succulents available in sizes ranging from mini to XXL for every space.
Which Aloe to choose?
Verdeia offers several Aloe species with distinct shapes and sizes in the Aloe collection and in the cacti and succulents — all as resilient and low-maintenance as Aloe vera:
- Aloe vera (this plant) — long, fleshy, tender green to slightly bluish leaves, wide rosette. The best-known and most versatile, from 10 cm to 70 cm depending on the size.
- Aloe paradisicum — shorter, very serrated leaves, compact and very graphic form. The choice for a very sculptural cactus effect in a small space.
- Aloe Spider — thin, long leaves in a very tight fan, slender and delicate form. The choice for a finer, airier silhouette.
Light & placement
Aloe vera is one of the few indoor plants that truly enjoys full sun — the more direct light it receives, the more vigorous it is and the more its leaves take on beautiful golden or reddish hues. It is one of the easy plants for city dwellers that thrive on very sunny windows that few plants can exploit.
- Light: bright to full sun — ideally a south- or west-facing window.
- Outdoors: sunny terrace or balcony in warm seasons, bring inside before the first cool nights below 10 °C.
- Temperature: 18 to 28 °C — tolerates heat and dry air very well.
The more intense the light, the more the leaves develop golden or reddish highlights — a natural sun protection phenomenon that enhances the graphic and sculptural character of the rosette.
Watering & care
Aloe vera always prefers lack of water to excess — its fleshy leaves store enough water for several weeks. It is one of the most tolerant plants to watering neglect among the cacti and succulents in the catalog.
- Frequency: every 2 to 3 weeks in summer — water only when the soil is completely dry.
- In winter: space out to every 4 to 6 weeks — Aloe enters dormancy and consumes very little.
- Soil: well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix enriched with sand and perlite — never plain universal soil which retains too much moisture.
- Absolutely avoid: standing water in the saucer or decorative pot, the main cause of root rot in Aloe.
If the leaves become soft or slightly wrinkled, moderate watering will restore their vigor within 48 hours — this is the only reliable sign that the plant needs water.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The sculptural shape and graphic foliage of Aloe vera make it a natural accent plant in any bright interior — it structures spaces with its verticality and pairs perfectly with raw materials and desert tones.
- For a very graphic chic desert corner, pair Aloe vera with an Euphorbia acrurensis and a Crassula — the fleshy rosette leaves of Aloe, the ribbed vertical stems of Euphorbia, and the compact branched form of Crassula create three very distinct silhouettes in a coherent green palette.
- For a very graphic plant contrast, pair it with a Sansevieria 'Laurentii' — the horizontal rosette leaves of Aloe contrast with the vertical striped leaves of Sansevieria for a very structured desert composition.
- In a natural terracotta decorative pot, the warm tones of the raw ceramic complement the golden highlights the leaves take in full sun — choose a terracotta or concrete decorative pot for a Mediterranean or contemporary look depending on your style.
- On a very sunny windowsill, Aloe vera is the only indoor plant that fully benefits from a south-facing exposure — where most plants burn, it thrives and intensifies its colors.
Verdeia Tips
- Let the soil dry completely before each watering: this is the most important rule with Aloe vera — watering too often when the soil is still moist causes silent root rot that destroys the plant from the inside before the leaves show visible signs.
- Rotate the plant regularly for balanced growth: Aloe naturally orients its rosette toward the light — turning it a quarter turn every two weeks ensures a symmetrical shape and balanced form on all sides.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring with a very well-draining mix: a substrate made of special cactus soil, coarse sand, and perlite ensures optimal drainage — our guide on repotting indoor plants details the steps.
