The Codiaeum variegatum 'Dreadlock', also called Croton Dreadlock, is a tropical plant with absolutely spectacular multicolored foliage native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Oceania. Its thin, narrow, drooping leaves display a fiery mix of green, yellow, orange, and red that changes with light and seasons — a living painting in constant flux.

The Croton Dreadlock requires a lot of light — it’s a sine qua non condition. Without bright light, the colors fade and the leaves fall.
- Exposure: bright to very bright light essential — tolerates a few hours of direct sun in the morning or late afternoon.
- Ideal: bright living room, veranda, sunlit office, near a south, east, or west-facing window.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C — sensitive to cold and temperatures below 15 °C.
- Substrate: rich, light, and well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
The more light your Croton receives, the more intense its colors — green shifts to orange then red with exposure. In a too dark spot, it stays pale green.
Watering & care
The Croton Dreadlock prefers a slightly moist substrate and high ambient humidity. It dislikes sudden environmental changes — stability, consistent light, and humidity are key. Check our watering guide for best practices.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist, let the top 2 to 3 cm dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in summer, every 10 to 15 days in winter.
- Water: use room temperature, filtered or rested water for 24 hours — Croton is sensitive to lime.
- Humidity: prefers 60 to 80% — mist regularly or place on a tray of moist clay pebbles.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half every 2 weeks in spring and summer.

- Stability is key — Croton hates sudden changes in environment, drafts, and frequent moves. Choose its permanent location once and for all, ideally near a bright window, and do not move it again. Each move causes leaf drop, sometimes significant.
- Colors are the barometer of its health — leaves turning green and losing their orange and red colors indicate a lack of light. Brown tips indicate air that is too dry or water that is too hard. Massive leaf drop signals thermal shock, drafts, or improper watering.
- Wear gloves when pruning — like all Euphorbiaceae, Croton produces an irritating white latex when a stem is cut. This latex can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested — always handle with gloves.
- Toxic to pets — the latex contained in all parts of the plant is irritating and toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of animals.
