Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Croton Dreadlock difficult to care for? Its care is moderate — it is more demanding than the average houseplant, mainly due to its need for bright light and high humidity. Its main sensitivity is its reaction to environmental changes: once settled in a good spot, it is relatively easy to keep healthy.
Why is my Croton Dreadlock losing its leaves? Leaf drop is almost always related to a change in environment — moving, drafts, temperature shock, or sudden light variation. Place it once and for all in its final bright location and do not move it anymore. A slight drop after delivery is normal and temporary.

🌈 Spectacular multicolored foliage in green, yellow, orange, and red • 🌿 Thin drooping leaves • ☀️ Bright light essential • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
The Codiaeum variegatum 'Dreadlock', also called Croton Dreadlock, is a tropical plant with absolutely spectacular multicolored foliage native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Oceania. Its thin, narrow, drooping leaves display a fiery mix of green, yellow, orange, and red that changes with light and seasons — a living painting in constant flux.
A true statement plant, its colors intensify with light. Discover it in our Croton collection and in our tropical selection.
Which Croton variety to choose?
The genus Codiaeum offers several varieties with distinct foliage — here are the varieties available in our catalog:
- Croton 'Dreadlock' (this plant) — thin, drooping leaves, multicolor palette, H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. The most original and exotic shape.
- Croton 'Wilma' — elongated wavy leaves with bright colors, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The graphic and colorful version.
- Croton 'Mammi' — thin, curved leaves with intense colors, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The version with a unique texture.
- Croton 'Petra' — broad oval leaves with classic bright colors. The most popular and accessible version.
- Croton 'Sunny Star' — fine star-shaped leaves, compact size H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. The colorful mini version.
- Croton 'Magnificent' — spectacular broad leaves with intense colors, H110 cm | Pot Ø27 cm. The XXL statement version.
Why choose the Dreadlock? It’s the variety with the most original shape — its thin, drooping leaves resemble plant dreadlocks, a unique texture in the Croton world. Ideal if you want a truly standout plant.
Exposure & location
The Croton Dreadlock requires a lot of light — it’s a sine qua non condition. Without bright light, the colors fade and the leaves fall.
- Exposure: bright to very bright light essential — tolerates a few hours of direct sun in the morning or late afternoon.
- Ideal: bright living room, veranda, sunlit office, near a south, east, or west-facing window.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C — sensitive to cold and temperatures below 15 °C.
- Substrate: rich, light, and well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite.
The more light your Croton receives, the more intense its colors — green shifts to orange then red with exposure. In a too dark spot, it stays pale green.
Watering & care
The Croton Dreadlock prefers a slightly moist substrate and high ambient humidity. It dislikes sudden environmental changes — stability, consistent light, and humidity are key. Check our watering guide for best practices.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist, let the top 2 to 3 cm dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in summer, every 10 to 15 days in winter.
- Water: use room temperature, filtered or rested water for 24 hours — Croton is sensitive to lime.
- Humidity: prefers 60 to 80% — mist regularly or place on a tray of moist clay pebbles.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half every 2 weeks in spring and summer.
Upon delivery or during transport, slight leaf drop is normal — the Croton acclimates gradually. Allow 2 to 3 weeks in its final spot before assessing its condition.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its multicolored foliage is already a composition in itself — combine it sparingly to avoid visual overload.
- In combination: pair it with a Ficus elastica Robusta or a Zamioculcas — their uniform dark green foliage highlights the Croton’s colors by contrast. Find more ideas in our tropical plant pairing guide.
- Ideal pot: a Capi Nature Groove taupe pot — its neutral natural shade highlights the multicolored foliage without competing with it.
- Atmosphere: perfect as a statement plant alone in a bright corner — give it space so its drooping leaves can fully express themselves.
Verdeia tips
- Stability is key — Croton hates sudden changes in environment, drafts, and frequent moves. Choose its permanent location once and for all, ideally near a bright window, and do not move it again. Each move causes leaf drop, sometimes significant.
- Colors are the barometer of its health — leaves turning green and losing their orange and red colors indicate a lack of light. Brown tips indicate air that is too dry or water that is too hard. Massive leaf drop signals thermal shock, drafts, or improper watering.
- Wear gloves when pruning — like all Euphorbiaceae, Croton produces an irritating white latex when a stem is cut. This latex can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested — always handle with gloves.
- Toxic to pets — the latex contained in all parts of the plant is irritating and toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of animals.
