Frequently asked questions
How to preserve the colors of the Croton Wilma? The yellow, orange, and red colors intensify with good bright indirect light. Without enough light, the foliage gradually turns green. Place it near a large south-, east-, or west-facing window. New leaves will regain their colors as soon as the light is adequate.
Is the Croton Wilma toxic to pets? Yes, Croton is toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. Its white latex is also irritating to human skin during pruning or cleaning — wear gloves. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.

🌈 Spectacular multicolored foliage • ☀️ Bright light essential • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm • 🎨 Colors that evolve with the light • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
The Croton Wilma (Codiaeum variegatum) is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia and Oceania. Its elongated, wavy leaves combine green, yellow, orange and red in patterns that evolve with the seasons and light — each leaf is different, and the tones intensify with good exposure. One of the most colorful indoor plants without needing flowers.
Above all, a light-loving plant: without a well-lit spot, it loses its colors and leaves. But in the right conditions, it is a truly remarkable decorative foliage plant. Please note: its sap is irritating — wear gloves when pruning and keep it out of animals' reach.
Which Croton variety should you choose?
Each Croton has a distinct leaf shape — that's what sets them apart beyond their colors. Here are the varieties available among the Crotons:
- Croton Wilma (this plant) — elongated, wavy leaves in vibrant green/yellow/orange/red, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most graphic and wavy.
- Croton Mammi — slender leaves curving downward, intense colors, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most sculptural.
- Croton Petra — classic broad, oval leaves in vibrant colors. The most accessible and widespread.
- Croton Dreadlock — slender, twisted, trailing leaves, H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. The most original and dramatic.
- Croton Sunny Star — slender, star-shaped leaves, compact size H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. The smallest and brightest.
- Croton Magnificent — large, broad leaves, XXL size H110 cm | Pot Ø27 cm. The largest.
Wilma stands out for its wavy leaves — a unique textured effect within the Croton family that gives it an extra sculptural dimension alongside its range of colors.
Light & placement
The Croton Wilma is a tropical sun-loving plant — light is non-negotiable. Without it, the colors fade and the leaves fall.
- Ideal light: bright to very bright light — near a large south-, east- or west-facing window.
- Tolerates: a few hours of direct sun in the morning or late afternoon.
- To avoid: scorching midday sun in midsummer and dark rooms, which cause the leaves to turn green and fall.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C — highly sensitive to cold and drafts. Below 15 °C, leaf drop is guaranteed.
- Humidity: it prefers 60–80% ambient humidity — mist regularly or place it on a bed of damp clay pebbles.
- Substrate: light, well-draining all-purpose potting soil.
The brighter its location, the more intense its colors will be — yellows, oranges, and reds become more vibrant with light. In partial shade, the foliage gradually tends to turn green.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — water when the top 2–3 cm of substrate is dry.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in summer, every 10–15 days in winter.
- Water: water at room temperature, filtered or left to stand for 24 hours — the Croton is sensitive to limescale.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted by half, every 2 weeks in spring and summer.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly — this is one of the most important care practices for preventing brown tips and leaf drop.
- Cleaning: dust the leaves with a damp cloth — wear gloves, as the latex can irritate the skin.
The Croton dislikes sudden changes in its environment — avoid moving it frequently. Choose its permanent spot as soon as you receive it and do not move it again.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Croton Wilma is a statement plant — its colors immediately draw the eye and structure a space all on its own. It does not need to be surrounded by other plants to stand out.
- Alone in a bright corner: in a terracotta or matte white ceramic pot, it creates a warm, colorful focal point in a living room or bright entryway.
- Contrasted with solid green: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Ficus to make its colors stand out against a neutral dark green background.
- In a Croton arrangement: several Croton varieties together create a flamboyant plant palette — the same requirements, with highly contrasting leaf shapes.
Its foliage evolves naturally — new leaves often emerge green and gradually develop color with light. Be patient; each new leaf is a surprise.
Verdeia Tips
- Leaf drop is its warning signal — this is the Croton's number one problem, and it rarely has just one cause. Check in this order: drafts, a recent change of location, lack of light, irregular watering, air that is too dry. Stabilize all these variables before drawing conclusions.
- Never move it during acclimatization — slight leaf drop during the first few weeks after delivery is normal. Place it directly in its final location and leave it there for 4 to 6 weeks without moving it.
- Fading colors: lack of light — if the foliage gradually turns green, the plant is not receiving enough light. Move it closer to a window — new leaves will regain their colors.
- The latex is irritating — wear gloves — any cut to the stem releases a white latex that can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested. Wear gloves when pruning and cleaning, and wash your hands after handling.
- High humidity is essential in winter — heating dries out the air and causes brown tips and leaf drop. Mist 2 to 3 times a week or place the pot on a bed of moist clay pebbles.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals and humans — the latex and leaves are toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. In a household with pets, it is better to choose from the plants and animals that are compatible.
