Frequently Asked Questions
How to preserve the colors of the Croton Mammi? The yellow, orange, and red colors intensify with good bright indirect light. Without enough light, new leaves come out green and the colors gradually fade. Place it near an east- or west-facing window. Leaves that have already turned green will not recolor, but new growth will have the proper colors.
Is the Croton Mammi toxic to pets? Yes, its white sap is irritating and toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. It can also cause skin irritation on contact — wear gloves when cleaning or pruning. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.

🌿 Narrow multicolored wavy leaves • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm • 🎨 Colors that intensify with light • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Croton Mammi (Codiaeum variegatum) is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. Its uniqueness in the Croton family lies in the shape of its leaves — narrow, wavy, almost twisted — giving them a uniquely graphic texture compared to the wide, flat leaves of other varieties. The green, yellow, orange, and red colors intensify with light and change throughout the seasons.
Like all Crotons, it requires bright light, consistent humidity, and a stable spot — once placed, don’t move it. Note: irritating sap, toxic to pets. Discover it in our Croton collection.
Which Croton variety to choose?
Each Croton has a distinct leaf shape — that’s what sets them apart beyond their colors. Here are the available profiles:
- Croton Mammi (this plant) — narrow multicolored wavy leaves, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most textured and graphic.
- Croton Wilma — elongated wavy leaves, bright colors, same size H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. Same shape, wider leaves.
- Croton Dreadlock — very narrow twisted leaves, H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. The most dramatic and original.
- Croton Petra — classic wide oval leaves. The most classic and accessible.
- Croton Magnificent — very large wide leaves, XXL size H110 cm | Pot Ø27 cm. The most imposing.
Le Mammi is the ideal choice if you’re looking for a compact Croton with a unique leaf texture — its wavy leaves immediately set it apart from other varieties even from a distance. Find the Croton Sunny Star for an even more compact version H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm.
Exposure & location
The Croton Mammi is a tropical sun plant — light is its non-negotiable condition.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — near an east- or west-facing window, a few hours of gentle sun accepted.
- Avoid: harsh midday sun in full summer, dark rooms that cause leaves to green and fall.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, no drafts or sudden changes.
- Humidity: 50–70% ambient humidity — mist regularly or place a humidifier nearby.
- Soil: light, well-draining universal potting mix.
If new leaves mostly emerge green without bright colors, move the plant to a brighter spot — new shoots color up properly once light is sufficient. See our light and humidity guide to find the right location.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — keep the soil slightly moist without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in spring-summer, slightly less in winter.
- Water: room temperature water, filtered or left to stand for 24 hours — Croton is sensitive to lime.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly — Mammi’s wavy leaves collect less dust than broad leaves but are sensitive to dry air.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid green plant fertilizer, once a month in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth — wear gloves, the sap is irritating.
Croton dislikes sudden changes in environment — avoid moving it once its spot is chosen. Pick its permanent place upon arrival and check our new plant care guide to start off right.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The Croton Mammi is a statement plant — its colors and texture immediately catch the eye. It doesn’t need to be surrounded to stand out.
- Solo in a bright corner: in a white or black ceramic pot, its multicolored wavy leaves create an immediate tropical focal point.
- In contrast with solid green: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Ficus to highlight its warm colors against a neutral dark green background.
- In Crotons composition: several varieties of Crotons together — same requirements, very contrasting leaf shapes. The Mammi adds wavy texture to the composition.
Its new leaves often emerge green and gradually color — each new shoot is a surprise to watch over the weeks.
Verdeia advice
- Choose its location before delivery — Mammi reacts to location changes by dropping leaves. Plan its final spot before arrival and do not move it once placed.
- Leaf drop on delivery is normal — slight loss during the first 2 to 3 weeks is a usual reaction to the change of environment. Stabilize conditions and wait.
- Fading colors: lack of light — if the foliage gradually turns green, move the plant closer to a window. New leaves will regain their colors.
- High humidity in winter — heating dries the air and causes brown tips. Mist 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby. See our winter plant care guide to adapt them to the cold season.
- Sap is irritating — wear gloves — any stem cut releases irritating white latex. Wear gloves when cleaning and pruning.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — the latex and leaves are toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
