Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the leaves of a Croton fall off? It is almost always a shock — moving, draft, sudden temperature change, or overwatering. Choose the final location upon receipt and stabilize the conditions so the plant can rebalance.
How to keep the bright colors of a Croton Mrs. Iceton? Place it in a very bright spot with a few hours of gentle morning sun — the stronger the light, the more intense the pink and red shades, while a too dark location gradually makes the foliage turn green again.

🎨 Bicolor foliage in bright green and yellow • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌿 Turns pink and red with age • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
The Croton 'Mrs. Iceton' is a tropical shrub with spectacular foliage whose large, tough oval leaves blend dark green and bright yellow in unique proportions on each leaf. Its peculiarity: the foliage evolves with age and light — the green and yellow leaves gradually take on more intense pink and red tones over the months, visually transforming the plant over time.
Native to the tropical forests of Malaysia and the Pacific islands, it is part of the wide range of Crotons in the catalog — one of the most colorful families of our indoor plants. Like all Crotons, it is sensitive to moving — choose its final location upon receipt and place it in a bright, stable spot.
Which variety of Croton to choose?
Each Croton is distinguished by the shape of its leaves and its color palette. Here is how the 'Mrs. Iceton' fits within the range:
- Croton 'Mrs. Iceton' (this plant) — large oval dark green and bright yellow leaves that gradually turn pink and red with age and light. The brightest and most evolving.
- Croton 'Petra' — large dark green oblong leaves veined with yellow, orange, and red, robust and structured habit. The most classic and contrasting.
- Croton 'Mammi' — slender, slightly wavy leaves with colorful veins, very slender habit. The most graphic in elongated shape.
- Croton 'Wilma' — broad leaves in warm tones dominated by yellow and orange, compact and dense habit. The warmest in colors.
- Croton 'Dreadlock' — long, multicolored spiral corkscrew leaves, very original silhouette. The most unusual and sculptural.
- Croton 'Sunny Star' — dark green leaves speckled with bright yellow, compact habit. The most graphic in contrasting speckling.
The 'Mrs. Iceton' has green and yellow foliage at sale that evolves into pink and red shades with age and good light — a plant that visually transforms over several months.
Exposure & placement
The Croton 'Mrs. Iceton' needs bright light to maintain the intensity of its colors — in insufficient light, the leaves gradually turn green and lose their characteristic pink and red hues. It is one of the Crotons that best tolerates a few hours of gentle direct sun in the morning or late afternoon, which further brightens its palette.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light with a few hours of gentle sun — east or west window, very bright living room.
- Avoid: intense direct afternoon sun that burns the leaves, partial shade that dulls the colors, drafts, frequent moving.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C, minimum 15 °C.
- Substrate: rich and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
The stronger the light, the more the leaves develop their intense pink and red shades — an east-facing window with morning sun is the ideal spot to reveal the full palette of Mrs. Iceton.
Watering & care
The Croton is sensitive to both extremes — neither too dry nor too wet. Leaf drop is almost always a sign of stress: moving, drafts, overwatering, or underwatering. Use the finger test method to find the right rhythm, and refer to the diagnosis of yellowing leaves if the foliage shows signs of weakness.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become soggy.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring-summer; space out in winter.
- Water: at room temperature, preferably non-calcareous.
- Humidity: regularly mist the foliage — the Croton likes 60–70% ambient humidity.
- Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, saucer emptied after watering.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, every 2 weeks in spring-summer.
If the lower leaves fall one after another, it’s almost always due to a shock — moving, draft, or sudden temperature change. Stabilize the conditions and the plant will rebalance in a few weeks.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The multicolored foliage of the Croton 'Mrs. Iceton' is expressive enough to be a focal point on its own — it doesn’t need to be accompanied to create a strong visual impact. To design around it, find our ideas to create a tropical atmosphere.
- With a simple green background: pair it with a Ficus Elastica Robusta with large, deep green solid leaves — the simple foliage of the Ficus serves as a neutral background that highlights the colorful complexity of the Croton even more.
- In a warm tropical arrangement: pair it with a Areca Palm for a very tropical duo — the fine, light leaves of the Areca contrast with the large, thick, colorful leaves of the Croton.
- Decorative pot and color scheme: the pink and yellow shades of the foliage match a Jazz amber yellow decorative pot — the warm tone of the ceramic resonates with the yellow areas of the foliage without competing with the pinks.
- In a bright office: its well-structured shape at H65 cm makes it ideal for a very bright office corner — slip it into a natural Selin basket whose blonde fiber warmly complements the yellow and pink tones of the foliage.
Verdeia Tips
- Choose its permanent location upon arrival: Croton is among the most sensitive plants to relocation — each move can trigger significant leaf drop that may last several weeks before the plant stabilizes.
- Regularly mist the foliage: Croton is especially sensitive to dry indoor heating air in winter, which encourages spider mite infestations — misting 2 to 3 times a week effectively prevents these pests while maintaining the foliage’s vibrancy.
- Observe the foliage development: the new yellow-green leaves emerging at the top gradually take on pink and red tones as they move down toward the base, which is characteristic of this variety — each leaf follows its own color evolution independently of the others.
The Croton Mrs. Iceton produces a white irritating latex when pruning or cutting stems — use gloves and avoid any contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
