Frequently asked questions
How do you dry Statice flowers? Cut the stems at full bloom, remove the lower leaves, and hang them upside down in a dry, airy place — the flowers keep their lilac color for several months without treatment.
Why does my Limonium bloom so little? It’s almost always due to lack of sunlight or soil that’s too rich — move it to full sun and avoid fertilizers, as poor, well-drained soil encourages more abundant flowering.

🌸 Airy lilac-white blooms all summer • ☀️ Full sun • 💧 Highly drought-resistant • 🌿 Evergreen green-purple foliage • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Limonium 'Salt Lake', also known as Statice or Sea Lavender, is a remarkable flowering perennial known for its airy panicles of tiny lilac-white flowers that seem to float above green foliage speckled with purple. The effect is light, almost ethereal — like a cloud of colour resting on the flower bed. Each flower dries on the plant and retains its colour, extending the decoration well beyond the flowering period.
This European horticultural selection from the Netherlands is part of the outdoor plants collection. Its tolerance of salt, sea spray and poor soils makes it particularly well suited to exposed urban balconies and terraces, as well as dry Mediterranean gardens. The dried flowers are highly prized in bouquets, and their symbolism makes it one of the most beautiful plants to give as a gift.
Light & placement
Limonium 'Salt Lake' is a full-sun plant that flowers more abundantly with generous exposure. In partial shade, flowering becomes sparser and the foliage gradually loses its characteristic purple tones. Its resistance to salty soils and sea spray makes it an excellent choice for coastal balconies or locations highly exposed to wind.
- Ideal exposure: full sun — at least 6 hours of direct light per day.
- Locations: terrace, exposed balcony, flower bed in the ground, gravel border or rockery.
- Resistance: salt, sea spray, wind, drought, poor soil.
- Temperature: hardy perennial down to −10 °C if the soil is well drained.
- Substrate: light and very well drained — Mediterranean potting soil or universal potting soil + 30% sand or perlite.
The poorer and better drained the soil, the more abundant the flowering will be — Limonium prefers frugality to rich substrate.
Watering & care
Limonium 'Salt Lake' is one of the most water-efficient perennials — once well rooted, it can withstand several weeks of drought without damage. It is one of the signature plants for low-maintenance planters and terraces for city dwellers who want colour without daily care.
- Watering: very infrequent — allow the substrate to dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: once every 10 to 15 days in the height of summer; almost none in autumn and winter.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes is mandatory; do not allow water to stagnate.
- Fertiliser: none or very light — an overfed plant flowers less.
- Flowering care: cut off faded stems to extend flowering; leave the inflorescences to dry on the plant for a natural decorative effect.
When growing in a pot, water generously at planting during the first summer to encourage rooting — afterwards, Limonium requires almost no watering and manages summer drought on its own.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The lightness of Limonium 'Salt Lake''s panicles makes it a remarkable contrast plant — it visually lightens any composition and creates movement in flower beds even without wind. A reliable choice for a plant-filled outdoor relaxation space.
- In a Mediterranean trio: combine it with a Hidcote Blue Lavender and a Pennisetum Hameln — the lavender's upright blue spikes, Limonium's airy lilac panicles and Pennisetum's flowing tufts create a trio of light textures that move together in the wind.
- In a terrace pot: its green foliage speckled with purple and its lilac flowers pair perfectly with a lavender Jazz decorative pot — a colour harmony in violet tones that reinforces the composition's cohesion.
- Along a gravel border: plant it in groups of 3 in front of a Mediterranean Olive Tree for a composition entirely inspired by the garrigue — the olive tree's grey-green foliage, Limonium's evergreen tufts and its airy lilac panicles create a highly coherent colour palette.
- In a dried bouquet: cut the stems at peak flowering and hang them upside down to dry in an airy place — the flowers retain their lilac colour for several months without any special treatment.
Verdeia tips
- Plant in a very well-drained substrate: Limonium is much more afraid of stagnant moisture in winter than summer drought — heavy or poorly drained soil causes crown rot and the plant's death during the first cold winter.
- Prune faded stems to extend flowering: cut spent inflorescences at the base to stimulate new flowering stems — or leave them on the plant for a natural dried-bouquet effect that lasts into autumn.
- Protect the crown in winter in cold regions: cover the plant's base with a thick mineral mulch (gravel, pozzolana) to drain away moisture in winter — it is cold moisture, not frost, that kills Limonium.
Limonium 'Salt Lake' is also an excellent bee-friendly plant — its flowers attract butterflies and bees throughout the summer flowering period.
