Yucca elephantipes — Indoor Yucca or Spanish Dagger
The Yucca elephantipes, often nicknamed Spanish Dagger, is a graphic and robust plant with a slender habit. Its long, pointed leaves form a dense tuft at the top of a sculptural trunk, immediately giving a tropical and contemporary look to your interior.
A symbol of strength and longevity, the yucca is one of the easiest indoor plants to care for. It thrives equally well in bright rooms and on sheltered terraces in summer.
Exposure & location
The Yucca elephantipes likes bright light and indirect sun. It also tolerates slightly shaded situations, but its growth will be slower.
- Ideal: near a well-exposed window, without harsh direct sun.
- Outside: possible in summer on a sunny balcony, sheltered from strong wind.
- Perfect location: in the living room, a bright office, or a clear entrance.
Verdeia tip: the more light it receives, the thicker its trunk becomes and the denser its leaves grow.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — allow the soil to dry well between waterings.
- Frequency: every 2 to 3 weeks in summer, even more spaced in winter.
- Humidity: unnecessary — it prefers dry atmospheres.
- Care: regularly dust its leaves to promote photosynthesis.
- Level: easy — it tolerates missed waterings and adapts to most interiors.
Too much water is the only risk: its roots do not like stagnant moisture.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The Yucca stands out as a centerpiece in a modern or bohemian interior. Its graphic habit structures the space and creates a very elegant natural verticality.
- Visual look: slender silhouette and clean lines, perfect for a bright corner.
- To combine with: Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, or Ficus lyrata for a sculptural composition.
- Ideal pot: white ceramic or matte stoneware pot, for a sober and contemporary contrast.
- Where to place it: on the floor, in a corner or next to a sofa, to add height and volume.
Pair it with natural textures (wood, rattan, linen) for a zen and bright effect.
Verdeia tips
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years, in a larger pot with good drainage.
- Substrate: universal potting soil lightened with sand or perlite.
- Cleaning: wipe leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine.
- Wintering: if placed outside, bring it in before the first frosts (minimum temperature: 5 °C).
In summer, it loves spending a few months outside: its leaves then take on a more intense green.
