Euphorbia trigona ‘Rubra’ — Ø12 cm — H40 cm
☀️ Bright light • 🌵 Low watering • 🪴 Graphic shape • ⚠️ Slightly toxic
The Euphorbia trigona ‘Rubra’, also called African cactus plant or African milk tree, is a spectacular succulent native to Central Africa. Its vertical stems tinted deep green and purplish red make it an architectural and contemporary-looking plant, perfect for urban interiors.
Despite its cactus appearance, it is a euphorbia, thus a hardy, easy-care plant with sculptural charm. It brings structure and modernity to your space while requiring very little care.
Exposure & placement
The Euphorbia trigona ‘Rubra’ likes very bright, even sunny locations. It can be grown indoors near a south- or west-facing window, or outdoors during the warm season, sheltered from direct rain.
- Exposure: full sun or bright indoors.
- Ideal: windowsill, bright living room, modern office.
- Temperature: prefers a warm environment (≥ 18 °C) and does not tolerate frost.
- Substrate: well-draining potting soil, cactus and succulent type.
Verdeia tip: rotate the plant regularly to maintain balanced growth and straight stems.
Watering & care
- Watering: low; water approximately every 2 weeks in summer and less frequently in winter.
- Drainage: essential to avoid any water stagnation.
- Fertilizer: monthly from spring to autumn with diluted fertilizer for succulents.
- Pruning: unnecessary; its vertical growth naturally structures itself.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years, in a slightly larger pot with draining substrate.
Handle the plant carefully: its milky sap is irritating. Wear gloves when repotting or pruning.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The Euphorbia trigona ‘Rubra’ is a plant with character: its graphic lines and dark red hue make it a centerpiece in a modern, minimalist, or tropical decor.
- To pair with: Sansevieria, Zamioculcas, or Ceropegia woodii.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic, concrete, or terracotta to emphasize its vertical growth.
- Atmosphere: contemporary, urban, or chic desert.
Pair it with pots in neutral tones (beige, gray, black) to highlight its purplish shades.
Verdeia tips
- Give it direct light: the more sun it receives, the redder its foliage becomes.
- Water sparingly; let the soil dry well between waterings.
- Avoid any excessive humidity, especially in winter.
- Gently wipe its stems to remove dust and revive its colors.
- Handle it with care: its white sap is irritating to the skin.
