🌿 Variegated green and golden yellow foliage • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🏙️ Large structural plant • 📏 H95 cm | Pot Ø21 cm
Ficus Benjamina 'Goldenking' is a majestic tropical plant known for its dense foliage with small variegated green and golden yellow leaves and a graceful drooping habit. Its warm and bright variegation makes it the sunniest version of our Ficus Benjamina collection.
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Australia, Ficus benjamina 'Goldenking' naturally develops very dense foliage whose golden variegation is directly linked to the light it receives. The brighter the light, the more intense the yellow tones remain — an ideal plant for bright urban interiors looking to add a touch of warm greenery.
Which variety of Ficus Benjamina to choose?
Ficus benjamina comes in several cultivars with very distinct foliage — here’s how the 'Goldenking' stands out from other varieties in the catalog:
- Ficus Benjamina 'Goldenking' (this plant) — small variegated green and golden yellow leaves, very warm. The variegated version with the most golden and bright warm tones.
- Ficus Benjamina 'Twilight' — small variegated green and cream leaves, cool and airy tones. The bright variegated version in cool tones.
- Ficus Benjamina 'Danielle' — uniformly shiny dark green leaves, dense and bushy habit. The most elegant classic version.
- Ficus Benjamina Exotica — large slightly wavy dark green leaves, XXL habit (H120 cm | Pot Ø27 cm). The most majestic XXL version.
- Ficus Benjamina 'Kinky' — small variegated green and cream leaves, very compact habit (H28 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The miniature shelf version.
Light & location
Ficus Benjamina 'Goldenking' needs good indirect light to preserve the intensity of its golden variegation — it is one of the few Ficus whose color visibly changes depending on the light.
- Light: bright indirect light — avoid direct sun which burns the small leaves and prolonged partial shade which greens the variegation.
- Ideal: spacious living room, bright entrance, office, or room corner near a south- or west-facing window.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: rich, light, and well-drained — potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite.
The brighter the light (without direct sun), the more intense and contrasted the golden yellow variegation remains — in partial shade, new leaves gradually come out greener.
Watering & care
Ficus Benjamina prefers a slightly dry substrate between waterings — it tolerates excess water less well than dryness. Generalized yellowing of leaves (different from normal leaf drop) is often the first sign of overwatering — consult our common problems diagnosis guide if in doubt.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate surface dry slightly between waterings.
- Drainage: essential to avoid root rot — use a pot with drainage holes.
- Humidity: appreciates a slightly humid atmosphere — occasionally mist the foliage.
- Fertilizer: every 3 weeks in spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer.
- Winter rest: reduce watering in autumn and winter.
Clean the small variegated leaves with a damp cloth once a month — dust dulls the brightness of the golden variegation and reduces photosynthesis on these small surfaces.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its golden yellow variegation, Ficus Benjamina 'Goldenking' brings a rare warm note to plant arrangements — it naturally pairs with plants in warm tones rather than cool greens.
- Pair it with a Croton Mammi with multicolored yellow, orange, and red leaves and an Aglaonema Romeo with pinkish leaves — three plants in warm tones (golden / multicolored / pink-red) for a vibrant and coherent tropical composition in warm registers.
- Place it in the Mayk Gold bronze and golden decorative pot Ø21 cm — the brushed golden metal extends and accentuates the golden yellow variegation of the foliage for a very coherent warm-toned ensemble.
- Pair it with a Dracaena Bicolor with long green and pink striped leaves — two large plants with very different foliage (small and dense / long and drooping) in a complementary warm tone palette.
- For a contemporary living room or entrance, pair it with the Yucca Elephantipes 3 stems with stiff, pointed leaves — the contrast between the drooping dense foliage of the Goldenking and the strict architectural silhouette of the Yucca is very strong, two easy-care plants in two opposite styles.
Verdeia tips
- Avoid moving it at all costs: Ficus Benjamina is one of the most sensitive Ficus to changes — even a simple move of a few meters within the same room can trigger massive leaf drop; if this happens, don’t panic, place it in its final location and wait 3 to 4 weeks without intervening.
- Watch the variegation to adjust light: new leaves coming out greener than older ones indicate a lack of light — this is the most reliable signal to know if the plant is well placed, long before any visible symptoms on existing leaves.
- Mist the foliage rather than watering more: Goldenking appreciates foliar humidity but hates roots in water — if leaves curl or slightly roll, increase misting rather than watering frequency.
