Platycerium bifurcatum – Tropical Stag Horn Fern
🦌 Sculptural foliage • 🌿 Tropical epiphyte • 💧 Easy care • 🏙️ Urban design • 🐾 Pet safe
The Platycerium bifurcatum, also called Stag Horn Fern or Fougère corne de cerf, is a fascinating and graphic tropical plant native to the humid forests of Australia and Southeast Asia.
Its spectacular foliage, reminiscent of a stag's antlers, makes it a true living work of art. An epiphyte in nature, it grows on tree trunks and absorbs ambient moisture — an ideal asset for modern interiors seeking nature, design, and serenity.
Exposure & placement
- Indirect light or partial shade, no direct sunlight.
- Ideal temperature: 18–25 °C.
- Prefers a soft and humid atmosphere (bathroom, living room, bright entrance).
- Can be hung, wall-mounted, or grown in a pot.
Watering & care
- Water every 8 to 10 days, when the medium is almost dry.
- Keep the substrate slightly moist, without excess water.
- Regularly mist the foliage to recreate tropical humidity.
- Use non-calcareous water to preserve the velvety texture.
- Do not cut old leaves: they feed the plant and protect new fronds.
Verdeia Tips
- Ideal support: install your Platycerium on a wooden board or a cork plate covered with moss; it will naturally attach itself there.
- Misting: 2 to 3 times a week in dry atmosphere to compensate for lack of humidity.
- Cleaning: dust the fronds with a soft brush without rubbing (their surface is covered with a protective down).
- Rotation: rotate it regularly for symmetrical and harmonious growth.
- Winter rest: in winter, slightly reduce watering and place it in the brightest possible light.
Decor ideas & combinations
- Mount it on a wooden board, a coconut plate, or a cork frame for a “green wall” effect.
- Combine it with Asparagus, Rhipsalis, or Scindapsus for an airy and textured ensemble.
- In a pot, choose a raw terracotta or matte ceramic planter cover for a natural style.
- Ideal for contemporary interiors seeking authenticity and originality.
