🌿 Upright deep green leaves with horizontal marbling • 🏛️ Dense sculptural fan-shaped clump • ☀️ Sun to partial shade, tolerates low light • 💧 Very low watering • ✨ Ultra resilient • 📏 H80 cm | Pot Ø25 cm
The Sansevieria 'Diamond Green', also known as Diamond Green Mother-in-Law's Tongue, displays broad upright leaves of deep green striped with darker marbling, without yellow edges. Native to the arid soils of West Africa, it forms a dense clump of fleshy leaves that capture and reflect light like mineral facets — hence its name. Robust and graphic, it withstands watering neglect without flinching and ranks among the most iconic architectural plants in the catalog.
Its uniqueness compared to other Sansevieria: uniformly deep green foliage without yellow edges or cream variegation, and a very dense fan-shaped form that immediately gives it a sculptural presence. It is the most understated and imposing choice in the range.
Exposure & Location
The Sansevieria Diamond Green adapts to all light conditions, from direct sun to partial shade. Bright light intensifies the contrast of the marbling and promotes dense vertical growth. It also tolerates low-light rooms, making it one of the few large plants able to thrive in a hallway or entrance.
- Exposure: direct sun to partial shade — tolerates low light, avoid prolonged deep shade.
- Location: living room, office, hallway, entrance, bedroom — one of the few plants able to thrive in low-light spaces.
- Temperature: 15 to 28 °C — can tolerate 10 °C briefly, sensitive to frost.
- Soil type: very well-draining — mix cactus and succulent potting soil with perlite and a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot.
Rotate the pot a quarter turn every 2 to 3 weeks to maintain symmetrical growth — Sansevieria grows toward the light and may lean if not regularly rotated.
Watering & Care
Sansevieria is a drought-tolerant plant that requires very little attention. The main enemy is overwatering, which causes rhizome rot — this is one of the most common mistakes with this type of plant. It is better to underwater than overwater.
- Watering: very low — every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer, once a month in winter, allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer and avoid stagnant water at the base of the rosette.
- Humidity: indifferent — Sansevieria adapts to the driest atmospheres, ideal for heated interiors.
- Care: wipe leaves with a soft damp cloth every 2 to 3 months to preserve the marbling’s shine.
- Repotting: only every 3 to 4 years, when roots deform the pot — Sansevieria likes to feel cramped.
Pour water directly at the base of the plant, never into the center of the rosette — water trapped between the upright leaves causes collar rot and can topple the entire clump.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
With its imposing vertical form and uniform deep green foliage, the Diamond Green stands out as a key plant piece to create a green relaxation corner in a contemporary or minimalist interior.
- For a sober graphic composition, pair it with a Yucca elephantipes with its slender form and an Aspidistra elatior with glossy foliage — three architectural plants with contrasting silhouettes that complement without competing.
- To soften the vertical rigidity, surround it with a Dracaena Bicolor with variegated leaves and a Dracaena 'Magenta' with long slender purple leaves — the contrast between fleshy and flexible foliage creates movement.
- To enhance the sculptural aspect, place it in a black relief ceramic decorative pot with a glossy checkerboard — the matte/glossy contrast and deep black emphasize the verticality of the green foliage.
- To warm the atmosphere, choose a Gabriel ochre golden ceramic decorative pot with a honeycomb finish — the warm brown ochre calms the deep green and creates a Mediterranean ambiance.
Its height of 80 cm makes it perfect on the floor next to a sofa or armchair without blocking the view — it’s the ideal size to dress a room corner or frame a door.
Verdeia Tips
- Prepare an ultra-draining substrate: mix cactus potting soil and perlite in equal parts, then add a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot. The rhizome must be able to breathe to avoid rot.
- Repot only when necessary: Sansevieria likes to feel cramped. Repot only every 3 to 4 years, when roots deform the pot, into a container just slightly larger.
- Propagate by dividing the rhizome: in spring, remove the plant from its pot and gently separate the rhizomes at the base of the clump. Each division should have at least one leaf and some roots to restart successfully.
