Acer palmatum ‘Garnet’ — Compact & refined red Japanese maple
🍁 Intense red foliage • 🌿 Compact & elegant habit • 🏙️ Ideal for terraces & balconies • ☀️ Partial shade / gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to −20 °C
Acer palmatum ‘Garnet’, or red Japanese maple, is a highly appreciated variety for its finely cut foliage and bright garnet red hue. Graphic, delicate, and luminous, it instantly brings a zen and high-end presence to any space.
Compact and slow-growing, it is ideal in a pot on a balcony or terrace, but also suitable for planting in the ground in a small urban garden. Its foliage changes with the seasons: deep red in spring and summer, then fiery orange-red in autumn.
Exposure & location
- Exposure: partial shade to gentle sun. Avoid the hot full afternoon sun in summer.
- Ideal location: sheltered balcony, semi-shaded terrace, small zen garden.
- Soil: light, fresh, well-drained, rather neutral to slightly acidic.
- Protection: sheltered from dry winds that can damage the fine leaves.
In a pot on a terrace, it immediately becomes the colorful focal point without taking up much space.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: regular to keep the substrate slightly fresh, never waterlogged.
- In a pot: monitor moisture well in summer, the soil dries faster.
- Nutrition: provide a mild fertilizer (such as for ericaceous plants) in spring and early summer.
- Pruning: minimal: only to harmonize the shape at the end of winter.
- Mulching: recommended in summer to limit evaporation and avoid thermal stress on roots.
Are the tips drying? Often it’s either too much hot wind or too direct sun during the hottest hours.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Japanese zen atmosphere: pair it with non-invasive bamboos (Fargesia), light gravel, and a stone lantern.
- Elegant shade bed: enhance with hostas, ferns, or heucheras with purple or golden foliage.
- Asian palette: combine with azaleas, rhododendrons, or camellias for a miniature Japanese garden vibe.
- In a design pot: in a sober and matte planter cover, it becomes a sculptural piece on a contemporary balcony.
Two maples of different colors (light green + garnet red) = mini Japanese forest on 2 m².
Verdeia tips
- Absolutely avoid the burning direct sun on the leaves in midsummer: they are thin and sensitive.
- Remember to slightly rotate the pot every 2–3 months for balanced and even growth.
- Protect the root ball from drying out: a light mulch in the pot makes a real difference.
- In winter, the pot can stay outside: the maple is hardy down to −20 °C. Just shelter the container if there is severe prolonged frost.
This maple is ideal for creating a calm and contemplative corner — reading, morning coffee, relaxed end of day.
