Acer palmatum ‘Going Green’ — Bright & refined green Japanese maple
🍁 Changing foliage • 🌿 Compact & elegant habit • 🏙️ Ideal for balconies & terraces • ☀️ Partial shade / Soft sun • ❄️ Hardy to −20 °C
Acer palmatum ‘Going Green’ is a compact and bright Japanese maple, ideal for small urban spaces. Its bright green foliage in spring and summer turns fiery red-orange in autumn, offering a colorful and soothing display throughout the year.
Elegant, hardy, and easy to grow, it fits perfectly on a balcony, terrace, or in a small garden, where it creates a zen and refined atmosphere inspired by Japanese landscapes.
Exposure & location
- Exposure: partial shade to soft sun, avoid harsh afternoon sun.
- Soil: rich, fresh, and well-drained.
- Cultivation: in a pot on balcony or terrace, or in the ground in a small garden.
- Protection: shelter from strong winds that can dry out the foliage.
Its graphic and bright foliage shows particularly well in partially shaded areas with soft light.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: regular, keeping the substrate fresh without stagnant water.
- In pots: monitor moisture more frequently, especially in summer.
- Fertilizer: balanced in spring, then every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing period.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to maintain a harmonious shape.
Mulch the base in summer to keep the soil cool and protect roots sensitive to heat.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- With non-invasive bamboos (Fargesia rufa, Moontears) for a zen and calming atmosphere.
- With hostas or ferns for a refined shade garden.
- With azaleas or camellias for a colorful Japanese-inspired spirit.
- In pots, pair it with heucheras or carex for a graphic and modern contrast.
Combine it with mineral elements — pebbles, gravel, or stepping stones — to enhance its zen look.
Verdeia tips
- Place it in morning light or under light shade in the afternoon to avoid leaf burn.
- Use a special ericaceous or slightly acidic potting soil to enhance its autumn colors.
- Avoid hard water to preserve the foliage’s brightness.
- In winter, leave it outside: cold stimulates dormancy and strengthens its vigor.
In a pot on a balcony, it becomes a true focal point — elegant, soothing, and changing with the seasons.
