Frequently Asked Questions
How to preserve the colors of the Croton Wilma? The yellow, orange, and red colors intensify with good bright indirect light. Without enough light, the foliage gradually turns green. Place it near a large south-, east-, or west-facing window. New leaves will regain their colors as soon as the light is adequate.
Is the Croton Wilma toxic to pets? Yes, Croton is toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. Its white latex is also irritating to human skin during pruning or cleaning — wear gloves. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.

🌈 Spectacular multicolored foliage • ☀️ Bright light required • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm • 🎨 Colors that change with the light • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Croton Wilma (Codiaeum variegatum) is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia and Oceania. Its wavy, elongated leaves blend green, yellow, orange, and red in patterns that change with the seasons and light — each leaf is unique, and the tones intensify with good exposure. One of the most colorful indoor plants without needing flowers.
A light-loving plant above all: without a well-lit spot, it loses its colors and leaves. But in the right conditions, it’s an absolutely remarkable decorative foliage plant. Note: its latex is irritating — wear gloves when handling and keep it out of reach of pets.
Which Croton variety to choose?
Each Croton has a distinct leaf shape — this is what sets them apart beyond their colors. Here are the profiles available in our collection:
- Croton Wilma (this plant) — elongated wavy leaves, bright green/yellow/orange/red colors, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most graphic and wavy.
- Croton Mammi — fine leaves curved downward, intense colors, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The most sculptural.
- Croton Petra — classic broad oval leaves, vivid colors. The most accessible and widespread.
- Croton Dreadlock — fine twisted hanging leaves, H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. The most original and dramatic.
- Croton Sunny Star — fine star-shaped leaves, compact size H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm. The smallest and brightest.
- Croton Magnificent — large broad leaves, XXL size H110 cm | Pot Ø27 cm. The largest.
Wilma stands out with its wavy leaves — a unique textured effect in the Croton family that gives it a sculptural dimension alongside its color palette.
Exposure & location
The Croton Wilma is a tropical sun-loving plant — light is its non-negotiable requirement. Without it, colors fade and leaves drop.
- Ideal exposure: bright to very bright light — near a large south, east, or west-facing window.
- Tolerates: a few hours of direct sun in the morning or late afternoon.
- Avoid: harsh midday sun in full summer, dark rooms that cause leaves to green and fall.
- Temperature: 18–26 °C — very sensitive to cold and drafts. Below 15 °C, leaf drop is guaranteed.
- Humidity: prefers 60–80% ambient humidity — mist regularly or place on a bed of moist clay pebbles.
- Soil: light, well-draining universal potting mix.
The brighter its location, the more intense its colors — yellows, oranges, and reds deepen with light. In partial shade, the foliage tends to gradually turn green.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — water when the top 2–3 cm of soil is dry.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in summer, every 10–15 days in winter.
- Water: room temperature water, filtered or left to stand for 24 hours — Croton is sensitive to lime.
- Fertilizer: liquid green plant fertilizer diluted by half, every 2 weeks in spring and summer.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly — this is one of the most important care steps to prevent brown tips and leaf drop.
- Cleaning: dust the leaves with a damp cloth — wear gloves, the latex can irritate the skin.
Croton hates sudden changes in environment — avoid moving it frequently. Choose its permanent spot upon arrival and don’t change it afterward.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The Croton Wilma is a statement plant — its colors immediately catch the eye and define a space on their own. It doesn’t need to be surrounded to stand out.
- Alone in a bright corner: in a terracotta or matte white ceramic pot, it creates a warm, colorful focal point in a living room or bright entryway.
- In contrast with solid green: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Ficus to make its colors stand out against a neutral dark green background.
- In Croton arrangements: several Croton varieties together create a vibrant plant palette — same care needs, very contrasting leaf shapes.
Its foliage changes naturally — new leaves often emerge green and gradually color with the light. Be patient, each new leaf is a surprise.
Verdeia advice
- Leaf drop is its warning sign — this is Croton’s number one problem, and it rarely has a single cause. Check in order: drafts, recent location change, lack of light, irregular watering, air too dry. Stabilize all these factors before drawing conclusions.
- Never move it during acclimation — slight leaf drop in the first weeks after delivery is normal. Place it directly in its final spot and leave it for 4 to 6 weeks without moving it.
- Colors fading: lack of light — if the foliage gradually turns green, the plant is not getting enough light. Move it closer to a window — new leaves will regain their colors.
- Latex is irritating — wear gloves — any stem cut releases a white latex that can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested. Wear gloves when pruning and cleaning, and wash your hands after handling.
- High humidity essential in winter — heating dries the air and causes brown tips and leaf drop. Mist 2 to 3 times a week or place the pot on a bed of moist clay pebbles.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — the latex and leaves are toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
