Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Croton losing its leaves? Leaf drop is the usual reaction of Croton to stress: change of location, draft, sudden temperature change, irregular watering, or air that is too dry. Stabilize all these conditions at the same time — do not move the plant, maintain high humidity, and water regularly. A slight drop during delivery is normal during the first 2 to 3 weeks of acclimation.
Is the Codiaeum Magnificent toxic to animals? Yes, like all Crotons, its white latex is irritating and toxic if ingested by dogs and cats. It can also cause skin irritation on contact — wear gloves when cleaning or pruning. Keep it out of reach of animals and young children.

🌈 Spectacular multicolored foliage • ☀️ Bright light essential • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H110 cm | Decorative pot Ø27 cm • 🎨 Colors that change with light • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
The Codiaeum Magnificent (Croton) is the XXL version of the Codiaeum family — at 110 cm tall with its large, broad, leathery leaves blending yellow, orange, red, and green, it’s a statement plant that immediately structures a space. Its colors intensify with light and change through the seasons.
Demanding in light and humidity, but spectacular in the right conditions — this is the Croton for spaces that can provide what it needs. Note: irritating sap, toxic to animals. Discover it in our Croton collection and our large plants XXL selection.
Which Croton variety to choose?
The Codiaeum Magnificent stands out from other Crotons by its size — it’s the most imposing in our catalog. Here are the available profiles:
- Codiaeum Magnificent (this plant) — large broad multicolored leaves, H110 cm | Decorative pot Ø27 cm. The largest and most spectacular.
- Croton Dreadlock — thin twisted multicolored leaves, H70 cm | Decorative pot Ø19 cm. The most graphic and original.
- Croton Wilma — elongated wavy leaves, bright colors, H60 cm | Decorative pot Ø17 cm. The most textured.
- Croton Mammi — thin curved leaves, intense colors, H60 cm | Decorative pot Ø17 cm. The most sculptural.
- Croton Petra — classic broad oval leaves. The most classic and accessible.
The Magnificent is the only H110 cm size. | Decorative pot Ø27 cm from our catalog — if you want a Croton that fills the space like a small tree, this is it.
Exposure & placement
The Codiaeum Magnificent is a tropical sun plant — light is its non-negotiable condition and even more critical at this size.
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light to gentle direct sun — near a large south, east, or west-facing window.
- Tolerates: a few hours of direct sun in the morning or late afternoon.
- Avoid: harsh midday sun in midsummer, dark rooms — without enough light the green foliage and the plant weaken quickly at this size.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C, no drafts or sudden changes.
- Humidity: 60–80% essential — mist regularly or place a humidifier nearby.
At 110 cm, the Magnificent needs a well-thought-out location from the start — once acclimated, don’t move it. Choose its final location before delivery.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular — keep the soil slightly moist without ever soaking it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring and summer, slightly reduced in winter.
- Water: room temperature, filtered or left to stand for 24 hours — the Croton is sensitive to lime.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly — the tough large leaves of the Magnificent are especially sensitive to dry air.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid green plant fertilizer, every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: dust the large leaves with a damp cloth — wear gloves, the sap is irritating.
The large leaves of the Magnificent quickly accumulate dust that clogs stomata and reduces photosynthesis — and thus the intensity of the colors. Dusting every 2 weeks is more useful than for smaller Crotons. Check our complete watering guide to adjust frequency according to the season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
At 110 cm, the Codiaeum Magnificent doesn’t need to be surrounded to make an impact — it structures and enlivens a space on its own.
- Solo in a bright corner: in a white or black ceramic decorative pot, its fiery colors create an immediate tropical focal point in a living room or sunroom.
- In contrast with solid green: pair it with a Monstera or a Ficus with solid dark green foliage to make its colors stand out by contrast.
- Ideal decorative pot: matte white, gray, or black ceramic — neutral tones highlight the colors without competing with them.
Its foliage naturally changes — new leaves emerge green and gradually turn yellow, orange, and red with light. Every new shoot is a surprise.
Verdeia Tips
- Choose its location before delivery — at this size, the Magnificent is difficult to move once installed. And like all Crotons, it reacts to changes in location by dropping leaves. Plan its final location before receiving it and check our new plant welcome guide.
- Leaf drop on delivery is normal — slight leaf loss during the first 2 to 3 weeks is a usual reaction to the change of environment. Stabilize conditions and wait.
- Colors fading: lack of light — if foliage gradually turns green, move the plant closer to a window. New leaves will regain their colors once light is sufficient.
- High humidity essential in winter — heating dries the air causing brown tips and leaf drop. Mist 2 to 3 times a week or place a humidifier nearby.
- Latex is irritating — wear gloves — any stem cut releases a white latex that irritates skin and is toxic if ingested. Wear gloves when cleaning and pruning, and wash hands after handling.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets and humans — latex and leaves are toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats, dogs, and young children. See our plants and pets guide for suitable alternatives.
