Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my laceleaf maple scorch faster than others? Its fine strips provide a large evaporative surface and dry out much more quickly than an undivided leaf.
Where should I place a weeping Japanese maple? In an elevated position and in partial shade, so the branches can cascade freely without scorching in the sun.

🌿 Finely cut emerald-green foliage • 💧 Trailing cascading habit • 🍂 Orange and red in autumn • ⛅ Partial shade to gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to -20 °C
Acer palmatum 'Emerald Lace' belongs to the dissectum group: its leaves are cut right down to the midrib into very fine strips, giving the foliage the texture of emerald-green lace. A species native to the forests of Japan and Korea, it is the most airy of the Japanese maples in the catalogue.
Its distinctive feature is its habit: dissectums grow in a cascade rather than upward, with branches trailing down in successive layers. The tree spreads more than it grows upward, making it a broad, low specimen rather than a vertical tree.
Which Japanese maple should you choose?
Seven cultivars in the catalogue, with different colors and habits:
- 'Emerald Lace' (this plant) - finely cut emerald green, trailing habit (3 sizes). The most airy.
- 'Bloodgood' - purple-red that holds all summer without turning green (2 sizes). The most stable red.
- 'Atropurpureum' - deep purple turning bronze, the most vigorous (3 sizes).
- 'Sangokaku' - coral-red bark in winter (2 sizes). The only decorative one without leaves.
- 'Orange Dream' - orange shoots then soft green, golden in autumn (3 sizes). The most changeable.
- 'Garnet' - cut garnet-red leaves, trailing habit (H40 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The red dissectum.
- 'Going Green' - bright green with solid leaves (2 sizes). The most understated.
Exposure & location
Dissectums are the most sun- and wind-sensitive Japanese maples: their very fine strips offer an enormous evaporation surface and dry out much faster than a solid leaf.
- Exposure: full partial shade or morning sun only - never direct afternoon sun.
- Location: sheltered terrace, patio, north- or east-facing balcony - raised position to let the branches trail down.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C.
- Soil type: moist, well-draining and acidic - ericaceous soil mixed with potting soil, never alkaline.
This is the maple in the catalogue that requires the most sheltered location: a dissectum in full southern exposure will scorch in a single afternoon during a heatwave.
Watering & care
Japanese maple roots are shallow and are just as sensitive to drought as to waterlogging. A moist but well-draining substrate is the right combination, and in a dissectum, browning at the tips appears faster than elsewhere.
- Watering: generous - the substrate must remain consistently moist from April to September, requiring closer monitoring than maples with full leaves.
- Water: non-limescale water is essential - hard water alkalizes the substrate and causes chlorosis within two or three seasons.
- Mulching: essential in a pot - a layer of pine bark helps retain moisture and gently acidifies the soil.
- Pruning: avoid it - the cascade forms on its own, and cutting destroys the tiers of branches. Remove only dead wood in winter.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for acid-loving plants, once at the beginning of spring.
The very fine ribbons lose water faster than full leaves: during a heatwave, a potted dissectum may need daily watering.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The cascade of green lace is best appreciated up close and from below: placed high up on a shaded balcony, the tree lets light filter through its ribbons.
- For a dissectum duo, pair it with 'Garnet' - the same finely cut foliage, the same weeping habit, green against garnet red.
- For a contrast in texture, place an 'Atropurpureum' next to it - its full leaves and upright habit highlight the delicacy of the dissectum.
- For a zen arrangement, add a Fargesia Rufa - the bamboo brings the verticality that the cascading form lacks.
- To enhance the pot, a raised container in ceramic or terracotta is essential: placed on the floor, the cascade collapses and loses its impact.
A dissectum only reaches its full potential when elevated: on a low wall or tall planter, its branches can trail freely for 40 to 60 cm.
Verdeia tips
- Choose the most sheltered spot: this is the most delicate maple in the catalogue when it comes to wind and sun. Its fine lacy leaves can scorch in an afternoon of full southern exposure, and the damage remains visible until autumn.
- Water it more than a classic maple: the larger surface area of its finely cut foliage causes much more water to evaporate. In a pot and during hot weather, daily watering is not excessive.
- Raise it up to reveal the cascade: the entire appeal of a dissectum lies in the tiered arrangement of its trailing branches. On a console table, low wall or tall planter, the effect is immediate; placed on the floor, it disappears.
