Araucaria heterophylla — Norfolk Pine
🌤️ Indirect light • 🌲 Evergreen foliage • 💧 Moderate watering • 🏙️ Natural and graphic elegance
The Araucaria heterophylla, often called Norfolk Island Pine, is a majestic indoor plant with a conical and regular shape. Its soft green foliage and architectural silhouette bring a touch of elegant and soothing nature to any urban interior.
Native to the coastal forests of Australia, this tropical conifer adapts very well to pot life. Easy to care for and long-lived, it resembles a small miniature fir and remains decorative all year round, even out of season.
Exposure & location
The Araucaria likes natural light without prolonged direct sun. Too much sun burns its fine needles, while lack of light slows its growth and yellows its foliage.
- Exposure: bright but indirect light, ideally near an east- or north-facing window.
- Ideal: living room, office, entrance, or bright veranda.
- Temperature: between 12 and 22 °C, avoid dry heat.
- Substrate: light and draining mix, such as universal potting soil with a bit of sand.
Verdeia tip: place it in a bright room and turn it regularly to maintain a balanced and harmonious shape.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate; the substrate should remain slightly moist but never soggy.
- Frequency: about once a week in summer, every 10–15 days in winter.
- Humidity: prefers a gentle atmosphere; mist the foliage when the air is dry.
- Pruning: unnecessary, its shape naturally forms over time.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer with diluted green plant fertilizer.
Avoid stagnant water and drafts: the Araucaria prefers stability and gentleness.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The Norfolk Pine evokes a Scandinavian and minimalist atmosphere while retaining a tropical charm. Its structured form makes it a centerpiece in a natural or contemporary interior.
- To pair with: Zamioculcas, Kentia, or Sansevieria for a zen and minimalist composition.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic, beige or stone gray, for a sober and elegant look.
- Atmosphere: perfect for a reading nook, a bright living room, or a calming bedroom.
During the holidays, it can be adorned with small natural decorations for a subtle and refined winter effect.
