Clematis ‘The President’ — Climbing purple clematis
Clematis ‘The President’ is an exceptional clematis, famous for its large star-shaped flowers of a deep and velvety purple. It dresses walls, balconies, and trellises with a romantic and refined touch, while remaining easy to grow.
Floriferous and vigorous, it blooms generously from spring to late summer and attracts pollinators while enhancing your outdoor space with a natural and timeless charm.
Exposure & location
The clematis likes to have its head in the sun and feet in the shade — a golden rule for a brilliant bloom. It thrives equally well on a sunny terrace or at the foot of an east- or west-facing wall.
- Ideal: trellis, pergola, fence, or well-exposed balcony.
- Tip: cover the base of the pot with a low plant to keep the roots cool.
- Soil: rich, light, and well-drained.
Verdeia tip: mulching around the base helps retain moisture and protect roots from heat.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: regular without excess, especially during flowering.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week depending on temperature.
- Pruning: light at the end of winter to stimulate regrowth and new flowers.
- Maintenance: easy — it regrows vigorously from the base each year.
- Level: moderate — requires some care but offers spectacular flowering.
Avoid watering the foliage: this prevents the appearance of fungal diseases.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Clematis ‘The President’ is a climbing plant with natural elegance that instantly transforms your outdoor space. Its purple flowering pairs beautifully with green or silvery foliage.
- Visual look: romantic, poetic, and colorful.
- To pair with: jasmine, climbing roses, hydrangeas, or decorative ivies.
- Ideal pot: large terracotta container or deep well-drained pot.
- Where to place: in a pot on a terrace, on a balcony trellis, or in a garden bed.
For a spectacular effect, train it to climb along an arch or around an urban balcony railing.
Verdeia tips
- Repotting: every 2 years, in a deep and stable container.
- Substrate: mix of potting soil, compost, and sand for good drainage.
- Flowering: from May to September depending on conditions.
- Hardiness: excellent — withstands down to -10 °C.
The older the clematis, the more generous it becomes — a true gem of plant longevity.
