Phormium ‘Pink Flamingo’ — Pink New Zealand Flax
The Phormium ‘Pink Flamingo’ is a spectacular variety of New Zealand flax, known for its ribbon-like foliage blending tones of soft pink, olive green, and cream. Its graphic tufted form and great resilience make it a perfect plant for exposed balconies and terraces.
Elegant, robust, and contemporary, it structures the space and brings a touch of subtle exoticism — an ideal decorative asset for lovers of urban or Mediterranean gardens.
Exposure & location
The Phormium ‘Pink Flamingo’ prefers sunny to partially shaded exposures. It tolerates wind, heat, and sea spray well, making it ideal for city terraces or exposed balconies.
- Ideal: full sun or bright light.
- Avoid: overly shaded areas, which dull its pink tones.
- Perfect location: planter or large pot on a terrace, or in a bed with other graphic plants.
Verdeia tip: regular watering the first year promotes rooting before it becomes almost self-sufficient.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: moderate — more frequent during hot periods.
- Soil: well-drained, tolerates dry soils once established.
- Pruning: remove dry leaves at the base to keep a neat shape.
- Maintenance: very easy, no special care required.
- Level: easy — perfect for beginners and sun-exposed balconies.
In pots, add a layer of clay balls to improve drainage and avoid excess water.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
With its pink and green ribbon-like foliage, the Phormium ‘Pink Flamingo’ is a true architectural plant. It pairs wonderfully with silver foliage, grasses, and Mediterranean plants.
- Visual look: contemporary and graphic ambiance, both soft and structured.
- To combine with: Carex ‘Ice Dance’, Cordyline australis, Lavender, or Gaura.
- Ideal pot: rectangular planter or large terracotta pot to highlight its ribboned leaves.
- Where to place: entrance, terrace, or sunny balcony.
In pots or beds, its pink reflections bring a soft and sophisticated glow to the urban garden.
Verdeia tips
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring, into a larger pot.
- Substrate: universal potting soil mixed with sand for optimal drainage.
- Hardiness: down to -7 °C — protect the base from frost with mulch in winter.
- Color: more light = more intense pink tones.
Clean leaves with a damp cloth to revive their tones and enhance their natural shine.
