Verdeia tips
  • Upon receipt, take the plant out of its box and allow it 24 to 48 hours to acclimate in a bright place without direct sunlight.
  • Check the soil moisture before watering; add a little water only if the surface is dry.
  • Avoid heat sources and drafts, and keep a slightly humid atmosphere to preserve the beauty of the foliage.
  • Wait 2 to 3 weeks before any repotting, allowing the plant time to stabilize.
  • Gently wipe the leaves to remove dust and observe them: slight stress during the first few days is completely normal.

Calathea warscewiczii – Velvet peacock plant

    🌿 Tropical • 🦚 Velvet foliage • 💧 Humidity lover • 🏙️ Chic urban jungle • 🐾 Non-toxic

The Calathea warscewiczii, nicknamed peacock plant, is a living botanical work of art. Native to the tropical forests of Central America, it captivates with its deep green velvet leaves, striped with light patterns and an intense purple underside that gracefully catches the light.

A symbol of elegance, calm, and exoticism, it instantly transforms any urban interior into a soothing tropical refuge. Its mobile foliage opens during the day and folds at night — a fascinating botanical spectacle at the heart of the chic urban jungle 🌿.

    Exposure & location

The Calathea warscewiczii loves soft light, never direct. It thrives in bright but filtered spaces, where its foliage retains its velvety shades and vibrant contrasts.

    • Prefer filtered light, partial shade, or areas lit without direct sun.
    • Perfect for bright rooms (living room, office, well-ventilated bathroom).
    • Ideal temperature: 18–25 °C, without drafts or thermal shocks.
    • Do not place near radiators or air conditioners.

Verdeia tip: Calathea likes stability. Constant light and moderate temperature preserve its velvety foliage and balanced growth.

    Watering & care

A quintessential tropical plant, the Calathea warscewiczii appreciates regular humidity and soft water. A good balance between soil and air moisture is key to maintaining the velvety texture and natural shine of its leaves.

    • Water as soon as the soil surface starts to dry.
    • Keep the substrate moist but never waterlogged.
    • Use non-calcareous or filtered water at room temperature.
    • Regularly mist the foliage, especially in winter or heated interiors.
    • Add a mild liquid fertilizer for tropical plants every 4 weeks in spring and summer.

In summer, monitor air humidity: too dry air can cause leaf curling. In winter, reduce watering but maintain sufficient humidity to prevent drying out.

    Verdeia advice

    • Substrate: mix of rich potting soil, perlite, and coconut fiber for a light and moist soil.
    • Drainage: a layer of clay pebbles is essential to avoid stagnant water.
    • Care: gently clean the leaves with a soft cloth to preserve their natural velvet.
    • Repotting: every 2 years in spring, to renew nutrients and promote growth.
    • Humidity: place the plant on a tray of clay pebbles with a water base to maintain a constant humid atmosphere.

Calatheas enjoy conversations and soft music — keep them in lively spaces! Their vibrant foliage reacts to vibrations and ambient light.

    Decor ideas & combinations

The Calathea warscewiczii is a centerpiece in plant decoration: its velvety foliage captures light and softens modern lines. It brings a touch of natural refinement to contemporary urban interiors.

    • In a golden, copper, or light rattan planter cover for a luxurious and warm effect.
    • In a matte or black ceramic pot for a minimalist and design look.
    • Pair it with a Maranta leuconeura for a harmony of moving foliage.
    • Combine with an Alocasia zebrina or a Monstera deliciosa for a structured tropical contrast.
    • Ideal in a relaxation room or reading corner for a soothing atmosphere.
