Euphorbia trigona — Candelabra tree
☀️ Bright interior / Soft sun • 🌵 Graphic silhouette • 💧 Low watering • 🪴 Easy care
Euphorbia trigona, also called candelabra tree, is an African succulent with an architectural look: upright stems, marked ribs, and reddish young shoots that highlight its sculptural form.
Ideal for a bright interior, it brings a design and minimalist touch with very little maintenance. (Not to be confused with Poinsettia, which is another species of the same genus.)
Exposure & location
Place the Euphorbia trigona in a very bright room, with soft or filtered sun. It tolerates a few hours of direct sun (outside heatwaves behind a window).
- Exposure: bright to sunny interior (bright light, soft sun).
- Ideal: living room, veranda, or office near an east/southeast window.
- Temperature: 16–28 °C; avoid < 12 °C and cold drafts.
- Substrate: very draining (cactus/sand/perlite mix).
Verdeia tip: rotate the pot a quarter turn every 2–3 weeks for straight growth.
Watering & care
- Watering: low; let the substrate dry deeply between waterings.
- Drainage: essential; always empty the saucer after watering.
- Fertilizer: light, once a month in spring-summer (diluted cactus fertilizer), pause in winter.
- Pruning: unnecessary; remove damaged segments with gloves.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in a pot with drainage holes.
Handle with care: its milky sap can irritate skin and mucous membranes.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its totem silhouette instantly transforms a bright corner into a focal point. It matches contemporary, industrial, or Mediterranean decor.
- To pair with: Sansevieria, Aloe, or Opuntia for a graphic trio.
- Ideal pot: terracotta, beige stoneware, or matte ceramic that allows the substrate to breathe.
- Ambiance: perfect on a sheltered and very bright terrace (frost-free) or in a sunny living room.
A mineral mulch (pumice, light gravel) highlights its sculptural character and keeps the collar dry.
Verdeia tips
- Water little: better to forget than to overwater.
- Give it maximum light to keep a compact form.
- Use gloves when pruning/repotting (irritating latex).
- Avoid thermal shocks near windows in winter.
- A heavy and stable pot limits the risk of tipping over when tall.
