Phormium ‘Rubra Nana’ — Red New Zealand Flax
The Phormium ‘Rubra Nana’ is a compact and elegant New Zealand flax, valued for its ribbon-like foliage with red, copper, and purple hues. Its dense silhouette and fan-shaped form make it a graphic and structural plant, perfect for adding depth to a terrace or balcony.
Very resistant and easy to maintain, this phormium is ideal for city dwellers seeking a natural, durable, and contemporary decor, even in spaces exposed to wind or sun.
Exposure & location
The Phormium ‘Rubra Nana’ loves full light and tolerates heat as well as sea spray very well. It also adapts to partial shade, but its colors will be deeper in full sun.
- Ideal: sunny balcony or terrace, Mediterranean or urban garden.
- Avoid: soils that are too heavy and waterlogged.
- Perfect location: large pot, designer container, or bed with grasses and exotic plants.
Verdeia tip: its red tones intensify with light — the more it is exposed, the more it shines.
Watering & maintenance
- Watering: moderate — allow the substrate surface to dry between waterings.
- Soil: well-drained, tolerates drought once established.
- Pruning: remove dry leaves at the base to maintain its neat shape.
- Maintenance: very easy — no structural pruning needed.
- Level: easy — perfect for exposed terraces and balconies without daily care.
In pots, add a drainage layer (clay balls or gravel) to prevent water stagnation.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The Phormium ‘Rubra Nana’ stands out with its colorful foliage and linear texture. It brings a contemporary and exotic note to plant compositions.
- Visual look: modern, graphic, and warm thanks to its red-brown tones.
- To pair with: Carex ‘Ice Dance’, Lavender, Cordyline, or Gaura for harmonious contrasts.
- Ideal pot: terracotta or anthracite gray pot to highlight its coppery colors.
- Where to place: in a pot on a terrace, in the ground in a sunny corner, or at the edge of a bed.
In an individual pot, it becomes a graphic piece on its own — ideal for dressing an entrance or a design terrace.
Verdeia tips
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years, in spring, into a slightly larger container.
- Substrate: light mix: universal potting soil, sand, and compost.
- Hardiness: down to -7 °C — protect the base in winter with mulch.
- Dull leaves: wipe them with a damp cloth to revive their shine.
Its changing reflections at sunrise give your outdoor space a warm and lively atmosphere.
