A south-facing terrace is a luxury — but also a challenge for plants. Scorching sun, heat reflected by walls and floors, drying wind: only species adapted to these conditions thrive. The good news is that these are often the most beautiful and generous in flowers and fruit.

Citrus and fruit trees: harvesting on your terrace

Full sun is a dream for citrus trees. Lemon tree, Calamondin, as well as Fig tree (Ficus carica), Grape vine, Kiwi, and Small fruit trees (blueberry, currant, raspberry, mulberry) give their best with maximum sunlight. The more they get, the more flowers and fruit they produce. Explore our Citrus, Ficus carica, Vitis vinifera, and fruit and aromatic plants collections.

Flowering climbers to dress the walls

A south-facing wall is the ideal spot for climbers that love heat. Campsis (trumpet vine) produces its fiery trumpets all summer long. Trachelospermum (star jasmine) fills the air with its fragrant white flowers. Wisteria offers an unforgettable springtime display. Passionflower and Clematis complete the palette. Find them in our Campsis, Trachelospermum, Wisteria, Clematis, and climbers and ground cover collections.

Mediterranean shrubs in pots

Olive tree, Rosemary on stem, and Lavender are made for full sun. Hardy, drought-resistant, and evergreen, they create an authentic Mediterranean atmosphere with minimal care. Pyracantha (firethorn) brings colorful berries in autumn. Viburnum tinus blooms in winter when everything else is resting. Explore our Mediterranean urban garden collection and our selection of mini shrubs and urban perennials.

Create shade and privacy

On a south-facing terrace, a plant privacy screen protects from neighbors while filtering sunlight. Fargesia (clumping bamboo) forms a dense, evergreen curtain in just a few seasons. Combined with climbers on a trellis, it creates a true green cocoon. Discover our Fargesia collection and our guide setting up my balcony.

Managing watering in full sun

Full sun exposure greatly accelerates evaporation. In summer, daily watering — even morning and evening during heatwaves — may be necessary for the most exposed pots. Water early in the morning or in the evening, never in direct sun. Choose pots large enough (at least 30 cm) to limit rapid drying. Terracotta pots are beautiful but dry out quickly; plastic or resin pots retain moisture better. Our complete watering guide and our article choosing the right pot will help you.

Designing your south-facing terrace

The trick: play with heights and textures. A Fargesia at the back for volume and privacy, flowering climbers on the walls, a lemon tree or olive tree as a centerpiece, and aromatic plants along the edges for scent and harvesting. Add climbing roses for color and a Japanese maple in a shaded corner for contrast. Browse all our outdoor plants in the balconies and terraces, full sun plants, and outdoor plants collections.
