Frequently asked questions
Is the Ficus carica Panache hardy? Yes, it can withstand down to -10 degrees C once well established. Protect it during the first two years with a frost cloth or bring it indoors to a sheltered spot during severe cold. In a sheltered and sunny location, it can stay outside all year round.
Why is my fig tree not producing figs? The main cause is a lack of sunlight — it needs at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day. Other possible reasons: pruning too late in autumn which removes fruit buds, insufficient watering during fruiting, or a plant that is too young and needs 2 to 3 years before producing significantly.

🍑 Yellow-and-green variegated figs • 🍃 Decorative lobed foliage • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø15 cm • ❄️ Hardy • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Ficus carica 'Panaché', or variegated fig tree, is a rare ornamental variety of the Mediterranean fig tree. Its uniqueness lies in its yellow-and-green variegated figs, unique among fig trees — fruit that is as decorative as it is edible, harvested at the end of summer.
Hardy, drought-tolerant, and easy to grow in a pot, it is perfectly suited to sunny balconies and terraces. A fruit-bearing and ornamental shrub in one, among the fruit and aromatic plants.
Which fig tree variety should you choose?
Each fig tree has its strengths — harvest period, hardiness, or compactness. Here is how Panaché compares with the other fig trees:
- Ficus carica 'Panaché' (this plant) — unique yellow-and-green variegated figs, edible, compact growth. The most original variety at harvest.
- Ficus carica 'Little Miss Figgy' — very productive dwarf variety, dark purple figs, ideal for small spaces. The most compact and most generous.
- Ficus carica 'Précoce de Dalmatie' — harvest from June-July, dark purple figs, abundant production. The earliest variety.
- Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey' — very hardy, withstands temperatures down to -15 °C, brown-purple figs. The most cold-resistant.
- Ficus carica 'Bornholm' — compact growth, dark purple figs, ideal for balconies. The balanced option.
Panaché is the only variety in our catalog to produce yellow-and-green variegated figs — if fruit uniqueness is your priority, this is the one.
Exposure & placement
The Ficus carica 'Panaché' is a Mediterranean plant — sun is its primary requirement for producing figs and fully developing its variegated fruit. The sunnier the exposure, the more generous the harvest.
- Ideal exposure: full sun to partial shade — minimum 4 to 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Location: sunny balcony or patio, facing south or southwest.
- Hardiness: hardy down to -10 °C — it can stay outdoors year-round in mild regions.
- Substrate: rich and well-drained — potting soil for fruit trees or enriched all-purpose potting soil.
- Pot: at least 30–40 cm in diameter for good root development.
The figs' variegation is more pronounced with good sunlight exposure. In partial shade, fruiting is reduced and the fruit pattern is less contrasting.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in summer, reduced in winter. Water more regularly during fruiting.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes is mandatory; do not leave standing water in the saucer.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer with a liquid fertilizer for fruit trees.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to maintain a compact growth habit and encourage fruiting.
- Repotting: every 2–3 years in spring, into a slightly larger pot.
The fig tree produces two harvests a year in good conditions: one in June-July on the previous year's wood, and one in August-September on new shoots. The first few days matter: a few simple steps help welcome a new plant.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The variegated fig tree is one of the few fruit plants to be as decorative as it is productive. Its structured growth habit and two-tone figs draw the eye even outside the fruiting season.
- On its own on a balcony: in a large terracotta or wooden pot, it immediately brings a Mediterranean atmosphere. One is enough to transform a patio.
- In a composition: pair it with lavender, rosemary, or an olive tree for a cohesive and aromatic Mediterranean urban garden.
- Ideal pot: natural terracotta or wood — warm materials enhance its Mediterranean character better than cold ceramic.
Its yellow-and-green variegated figs against a backdrop of green foliage create a highly decorative contrast in late summer — both productive and attractive.
Verdeia tips
- Sun above all: without at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, there will be no figs. This is non-negotiable. A north-facing balcony is not suitable.
- Water more during fruiting: while the figs are forming, a lack of water causes the fruit to drop prematurely before ripening. Maintain regular watering from June to September.
- Prune in late winter, not in autumn: autumn pruning removes fruit buds that have already formed for the June harvest. Wait until February-March, after the severe frosts.
- Be patient for the first harvest: a young plant takes 2 to 3 years before producing significantly. Its structured shape will hold your interest while fruiting gets established.
- Protect it during the first few years: hardy once established, it may suffer from frost before it is well rooted. A winter fleece or moving it to light shelter is sufficient for the first two seasons.
- 🐾 Non-toxic: the figs are edible and the plant is safe for animals. One of the few entirely pet-friendly fruit plants.
