🌸 Heart-shaped leaves mottled with pink, red, white, and green • 🌿 Spectacular red veins • ☀️ Bright partial shade • 💧 Substrate always moist • 🌡️ High humidity • 📏 H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Caladium 'Bicolor' — also called Angel Wing or Heart of Jesus — displays spectacular heart-shaped foliage blending soft pink, white spots, bright red veins, and green edges. Native to the tropical forests of South America, it is one of the most colorful tropical plants in the indoor plant kingdom, capable on its own of brightening a corner of a room with a burst of color.
Unique cycle: Caladium is a dormant plant — the foliage fades and disappears in autumn, the tuber rests during winter, and restarts in spring with even more colorful new leaves. A seasonal plant experienced as a decorative event to renew each year.
Light & placement
Native to the tropical understory, Caladium naturally grows in filtered light. Prolonged direct sun fades the foliage and burns leaf edges.
- Light: bright partial shade — avoid prolonged direct sun, especially in summer.
- Placement: living room, office, bright bathroom — away from heat sources and cold drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C in season — minimum 16 °C, sensitive to sudden changes.
- Soil type: rich, light, moisture-retentive — a mix of potting soil and peat with some perlite added.
The multicolored mottling of the Bicolor intensifies in bright filtered light — move the pot about a meter closer to the window if the pink and red shades fade over weeks.
Watering & care
A tropical understory plant, Caladium requires a substrate that is constantly moist throughout its growing season. Like the Marantaceae family to which it is related by its needs, it hates dry air that immediately browns the edges of its leaves.
- Watering: regular — substrate always moist during the growing season, about every 3 to 5 days.
- Drainage: essential — water must never stagnate in the saucer.
- Humidity: high — spray the foliage regularly or place the pot on a tray of moist clay pebbles.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants every 4 to 6 weeks during growth, stop at late summer.
- Winter dormancy: gradually stop watering as foliage begins to yellow in autumn, keep the tuber dry in its pot at 15-18 °C until it restarts in spring.
To restart growth in spring, bring the tuber out of dormancy by gradually increasing light, warmth, and watering — the first leaves appear in 2 to 4 weeks depending on ambient temperature.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The pink-red-white-green blend of Caladium Bicolor makes it a chameleon plant that harmonizes with almost any interior palette. To draw inspiration from air-purifying plants that also improve air quality, Caladium naturally pairs with filtering companions to transform a corner of a room into a beneficial mini-jungle.
- For a pink-toned mottled trio, pair Caladium with a Stromanthe Triostar with pink-green-white foliage and a Syngonium Mojito with green leaves marbled with white-pink — three graphic rhythms, same humidity needs, coherent pink palette.
- To soften the mottling with solid green foliage, add a Philodendron Imperial Green with large glossy green leaves — the simplicity of solid green makes the chromatic complexity of Caladium pop by subtle contrast.
- For a bookshelf or reading nook, place Caladium near a Aglaonema Cutlass with elongated silver foliage — the two contrasting leaf shapes (mottled heart-shaped vs. silver lance-shaped) create a refined dialogue perfect at side table height.
- To enhance the mottling in a tone-on-tone decorative pot, place Caladium in a powder pink ceramic decorative pot with relief Ø13.5 cm that extends the pink shades of the leaves, or in a Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot to make the foliage brightness stand out by dark contrast.
Group Caladium with other moisture-loving tropicals (Calathea, Maranta, Stromanthe) on the same shelf: their shared evapotranspiration creates a humid microclimate that protects them all from browned leaf edges.
Verdeia tips
- Accept winter dormancy: don’t throw away the plant when the foliage disappears in autumn — it’s a natural cycle, not plant death. Simply keep the tuber dry in its pot, in a room at 15-18 °C, until it spontaneously restarts in spring.
- Maintain constant ambient humidity: Caladium hates dry air and immediately reacts with irreversible browning of leaf edges — spray the foliage every two days in season or place the plant near a humidifier, especially in winter when heating dries indoor air.
- Choose a warm and stable location: avoid poorly insulated window sills and hallways where temperature can drop below 16 °C — Caladium is one of the tropicals most sensitive to cold, and a single cold snap can compromise the entire growing season.
