This variegated Callisia repens has small oval leaves marked with two silver stripes on either side of the central vein, with vivid purple-red undersides and stems. Native to the tropical regions of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, it joins the catalogue's hanging and trailing plants.
Its distinctive feature compared with green Callisia varieties is this play of colors: the silver variegation catches the light, the purple of the stems shows through the foliage, and the tips turn bronze in bright light. It is also one of the fast-growing plants capable of filling a hanging decorative pot in a single season.
Which Callisia should you choose?
The Callisia genus comes in several varieties with very similar growth habits but distinctly different colors:
- Variegated Callisia repens (this plant) — silver stripes on a green background, purple stems, bronze tips. The most colorful version.
- Callisia repens — uniform gray-green foliage forming a spreading cushion (H17 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most understated version.
- Callisia repens 'Turtle' — dense olive-green foliage with purple undersides, forming a domed cushion (H15 cm | Pot Ø10,5 cm). The most compact version.
Light & placement
Variegation depends directly on the amount of light received. In shade, the silver stripes fade, the stems turn green and the foliage becomes sparse; in good indirect light, the contrast intensifies and the tips develop bronze highlights.
- Light: bright indirect light — east- or west-facing window, or south-facing window with a sheer curtain. A few hours of gentle sunlight enhance the colors.
- Placement: shelf, hanging planter, windowsill, desk — anywhere the stems can trail freely.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C — minimum 12 °C; sensitive to cold drafts.
- Soil type: light universal potting soil, amended with a little perlite.
Leaves reverting to solid green indicate insufficient light: already formed shoots will not regain their color; only new ones will develop their silver stripes.
Watering & care
The fleshy leaves of the Callisia store a little water, allowing it to tolerate an occasional missed watering. A light, well-draining substrate, however, prevents the stems from rotting at the crown, while the foliage always signals a problem before it gets worse.
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the substrate dry to a depth of 2 cm, approximately once a week in spring and summer, and every two weeks in winter.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential; empty the saucer after each watering.
- Foliage: keep dry — water that remains between the tightly packed leaves quickly causes the stems to rot.
- Humidity: no particular requirements; ambient air suits it.
- Pruning: pinch the tips regularly to thicken the mat and prevent the stems from becoming bare at the base.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, diluted by half, once a month from April to September only.
The plant ages from the base: after two or three years, it is better to renew it completely from cuttings rather than try to rejuvenate the mother plant.

Verdeia tips
- Propagate it by pinching: each cut end roots within a few days when placed on moist potting soil or in a glass of water. Replanting three or four cuttings in the same pot immediately makes the clump denser.
- Water at the base, never over the foliage: the tightly packed leaves retain water and rot when wet. Pour directly onto the substrate, along the inside edge of the pot.
- Renew the plant every two years: the stems naturally become bare at the base with age. Starting again from fresh cuttings gives much better results than rejuvenation pruning.
