Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the flowers of an 'Annabelle' hydrangea wilt? The classic 'Annabelle' has weak stems that bend under the weight of the flowers — the 'Strong Annabelle'® was selected specifically for its reinforced stems that keep the flower clusters upright even after rain.
Can you dry the flowers of a 'Strong Annabelle' hydrangea? Yes, cut the stems to 40–50 cm in late summer when the flower clusters start turning green, hang them upside down in a dry, airy place — drying takes 3 to 4 weeks.

⚪ Huge white bouquets from June to September • 💪 Strong stems — flowers do not droop • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to –25 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H30 cm | Decorative pot Ø19 cm
Hydrangea arborescens 'Strong Annabelle'®, or white ball hydrangea, is a perennial shrub from a European horticultural selection, improved to fix the main flaw of the classic 'Annabelle': its strong stems carry the huge spherical white inflorescences without ever drooping, even after rain. Its dense bouquets of pure white, turning soft green at the end of the season, brighten balconies, terraces, and flower beds among the most beautiful outdoor flowering plants.
Easy to prune, very hardy, and suitable for pots or open ground, it is one of the reliable choices for a flowered and refined terrace from early summer until the first frosts.
Which white ball hydrangea to choose?
Verdeia offers several Hydrangea arborescens with distinct characteristics. Here is how to place 'Strong Annabelle'® among the varieties in the catalog:
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Strong Annabelle'® (this plant) — pure white spherical bouquets turning green, reinforced stems that do not droop, flowering from June to September. The most architectural variety and the most weather-resistant.
- Hydrangea arborescens 'Pink Annabelle' — same shape and size as 'Strong Annabelle'®, pink bouquets that turn green at the end of the season. The choice for a warm and romantic palette.
Exposure & location
Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle'® thrives in bright partial shade but tolerates gentle morning sun. Afternoon full sun dries out the foliage and shortens flowering — an east-facing spot or under a filtering pergola is ideal. It adapts well to both pot culture and open ground.
- Exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — avoid full midday sun in summer.
- Location: balcony, terrace, courtyard, shaded flower bed, or urban garden.
- Soil: rich, fresh, humus-rich, and slightly acidic — avoid overly calcareous soils.
- In pot: large container at least 30 cm deep, slightly acidic substrate.
In calcareous regions, water preferably with rainwater — tap water that is too hard gradually yellows the foliage and dulls the brightness of the flowers.
Watering & care
Hydrangea is one of the plants most sensitive to water shortage during hot periods — its large leaves evaporate a lot and the foliage visibly droops as soon as the soil dries. The finger test at 5 cm depth is essential to calibrate watering. If leaves yellow outside of water stress periods, check the possible causes of yellowing — often excess lime or iron deficiency.
- Watering: regular and abundant in summer — the soil should never dry out completely.
- Pruning: at the end of winter, cut all stems back to 10–15 cm from the ground to fully renew flowering.
- Fertilizer: organic or special hydrangea fertilizer in spring — avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers that favor foliage over flowers.
- Dried flowers: leave the heads in place all winter — they protect the buds and are decorative when frosted.
Never prune Hydrangea arborescens in autumn — unlike macrophylla hydrangeas, it blooms on new wood and winter pruning is not only harmless but essential for dense flowering.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The pure white of the spherical bouquets of 'Strong Annabelle'®, their impressive volume, and exceptional durability make it a structural plant that stands out in any composition — whether in a simple Mediterranean garden or a lush outdoor jungle.
- For a striking white and pink contrast in flower beds, pair it with Hydrangea 'Pink Annabelle' — same shape, same flowering schedule, very elegant white-pink palette that turns green together at the end of the season.
- For a shaded flower bed with long flowering, plant it in front of a Lonicera henryi evergreen in the background — the shiny dark green honeysuckle foliage enhances the brightness of the white bouquets by contrast.
- To highlight the white bouquets in pots, a black or anthracite ceramic decorative pot creates the sharpest and most elegant contrast — the bright white flowers stand out with maximum intensity against a dark background.
- For decorative composition beyond the season, leave the heads to dry on the plant in autumn — the bouquets turn parchment beige and remain architectural all winter, especially beautiful frosted in a large gray recycled plastic container.
Cut flowers from 'Strong Annabelle'® are stunning fresh or dried — cut stems at 40–50 cm as soon as the bouquets are fully open and immediately place them in water for a vase life of 10 to 15 days.
Verdeia Tips
- Cut back short every late winter without exception: Hydrangea arborescens blooms exclusively on new shoots — severe pruning to 10–15 cm from the ground in February-March produces vigorous stems carrying larger bouquets than an unpruned plant, which flowers high up with small scattered bouquets.
- Water generously on hot days: drooping foliage in hot weather is an immediate warning sign — water in the evening to let water penetrate without evaporation, and mulch at the base to keep the soil cool between waterings.
- Do not remove flower heads in autumn: left in place, old inflorescences protect the buds just below from winter frosts — remove them only in February during the annual pruning.
