Frequently asked questions
How do you prune a hydrangea? Prune after flowering by removing faded heads, or in March by cutting the stems in half. Avoid autumn pruning, which would remove the flower buds for the following year.
Can a hydrangea stay outside in winter? Yes, most hydrangeas are hardy and tolerate frost. In pots, protect the roots with a winter cover or bring the pot indoors to a frost-free sheltered spot during very harsh winters.

💙 Large intense blue corymbs • 🌸 Early flowering May-July • ☀️ Partial shade to gentle sun • 💧 Regular watering • ❄️ Hardy • 🐾 Toxic to animals
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Early Blue', or Blue Hydrangea, is a spectacularly flowering shrub native to East Asia — Japan and China. Its large flower heads in intense, bright blue corymbs make it one of the most decorative hydrangeas in its category. Its early flowering makes it one of the first to bloom in the garden. H45 cm | Pot Ø23 cm on delivery.
Hardy and easy to care for. Please note: toxic to animals. A reliable choice among plants for balconies and terraces.
Which Hydrangea variety should you choose?
Our catalog offers several hydrangeas with distinct characteristics:
- Hydrangea 'Early Blue' (this plant) — large intense blue flowers, early flowering, generous size. The most spectacular blue variety.
- Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle' — large white flower heads, compact and vigorous growth. The most understated and modern.
- Hydrangea 'Pink Annabelle' — large soft pink flower heads. The most romantic.
- Hydrangea serrata 'Pink Petticoat' — delicate pink lacecap flowers, compact size. The most refined.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — white climbing hydrangea, ideal against a shady wall. The only climber.
Exposure & location
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to gentle sun — morning light or light afternoon shade.
- To avoid: scorching afternoon sun, which wilts the delicate flowers, and strong winds.
- Soil: rich, moist and well-drained, slightly acidic — acidic pH intensifies the blue color.
- Hardiness: hardy — withstands temperate winters without protection.
- In a pot: balcony or terrace in partial shade, pot at least 30 cm in diameter.
The blue colour of Early Blue depends directly on the soil's pH — acidic soil (pH 5-6) intensifies the blue colour, while alkaline soil turns it pink. Use an acidic substrate or add an acidifier. Good seasonal care starts with preparing for spring.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular and generous — the hydrangea needs plenty of water, especially during flowering.
- Frequency: every 2-3 days in summer, less frequently in winter.
- Water: non-limescale water — limescale makes the soil more alkaline and turns the flowers pink.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for hydrangeas or flowering plants, once a month in spring-summer.
- Pruning: prune lightly after flowering by removing the faded flower heads. Structural pruning in March.
The hydrangea is one of the plants that signals a lack of water most clearly — its leaves visibly droop in the heat. Water generously as soon as the first signs of wilting appear. The frequency of watering should be adjusted to the season.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its intense blue makes it an immediate flowering focal point — a rare and precious colour in gardens and on terraces.
- As a solo potted plant: in a large terracotta or grey ceramic pot, its blue flower heads create a spectacular focal point on a partially shaded terrace or balcony.
- Pairing: combine it with a Hidcote Blue Lavender for a highly harmonious blue-violet duo — the same cool palette, with very different textures.
- Style: romantic, rustic, Mediterranean — its large flower heads pair well with interiors featuring natural materials.
Keep the dried flower heads in autumn-winter — the hydrangea is one of the few plants whose dried flowers remain decorative for several months after blooming. A reliable choice among outdoor plants.
Verdeia tips
- Acidic soil for intense blue — use a slightly acidic substrate (pH 5-6) or add an acidifier for hydrangeas. In alkaline soil, the flowers gradually turn pink.
- Water abundantly — hydrangeas consume a great deal of water during flowering. In a pot, check the moisture every 2 days in hot weather.
- Do not prune too early — prune after flowering or in March. Pruning in autumn would remove the flower buds for the following year. This key task is part of the care calendar.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals — hydrangea is toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach. In a household with pets, it is best to choose from these pet- and animal-friendly plants.
