Frequently Asked Questions
How can I keep it as pink as possible? Place it in the sun: it produces the most pink shoots in full light. In partial shade, the foliage stays more green and white.
Does it stay outdoors in winter? Yes, it tolerates temperatures of around -15 °C in a pot. In very cold weather or icy winds, it may lose some of its leaves and grow back in spring.

🌸 Bright pink young shoots • 🤍 Green leaves marbled with white • 🍂 Coppery tones in autumn • ☀️ Sun or partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -15 °C • 🏅 Gold medal at Plantarium
Nandina domestica 'Twilight' is a variegated sacred bamboo whose foliage changes from bright pink to white and then to green marbled with white. American horticultural selection (Texas), identified in 2010 as a mutation of 'Gulf Stream' and awarded a gold medal at the Plantarium show in the Netherlands, it brings brightness to any project to design a balcony.
In spring, its young shoots emerge bright pink, fade to almost pure white, then turn green marbled with white. The three shades coexist on the plant throughout the growing season. In autumn, the foliage takes on coppery tones. Its slow growth forms a dense, airy clump about 80 cm to 1 m tall at maturity.
Which colorful-leaved shrub should you choose?
Ten evergreen shrubs from the catalog, chosen for their foliage rather than their flowers:
- Nandina 'Twilight' (this plant) — bright pink young shoots, then green leaves marbled with white, coppery in autumn. The only variegated nandina.
- Nandina Obsessed™ 'Seika' — bright red shoots renewed all summer, bronze-red in winter. The reddest nandina in every season.
- Nandina 'Lemon Lime' — lemon-yellow young shoots, then bright acid green. The brightest of the nandinas, without berries.
- Nandina 'Gulf Stream' — coppery young shoots, blue-green in summer and orange-red in winter. A dense, slow-growing ball.
- Nandina Blush Pink™ — pink young shoots, reddish green in summer and fuchsia red in winter. The most compact, around 50 cm.
- Photinia 'Little Red Robin' on a stem — bright red young shoots, on a 90 cm stem. The most colorful in spring, for a sunny position.
- 'Emerald 'n' Gold' spindle tree on a stem — small green and gold leaves, shaped into a ball on a 90 cm stem. The most structured, in sun or partial shade.
- Leucothoe 'Burning Love' — smooth, narrow leaves, burgundy red in spring and purple in winter. The deepest purple, for partial shade in ericaceous soil.
- 'Little Flames' leucothoe - green leaves with flame-red tips in winter. The best choice for a small shade hedge.
- 'Spider Web' Japanese aralia - large palmate leaves speckled with white, for partial shade. The most exotic.
Unlike leucothoes, nandinas grow in ordinary soil, even alkaline soil, and tolerate sun: they are the easiest to place.
Exposure & location
The sun brings out the pink: in bright light, it produces more pink shoots, while in partial shade the foliage remains mostly green and white. It prefers a warm spot sheltered from cold winds.
- Exposure: sun or bright partial shade, sheltered from cold winds.
- Location: south- or west-facing balcony, sheltered terrace, entrance, large pot.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -15 °C - it can remain outdoors in winter.
- Soil type: any well-drained potting soil, acidic, neutral or alkaline.
The white parts of the foliage are more sensitive to reflected sun: avoid placing it right against a south-facing white wall.
Watering & care
It tolerates drought well once established, but dislikes standing water in winter: testing the substrate with your finger shows when to water, while a well-draining substrate with clay balls at the bottom prevents the roots from rotting.
- Watering: moderate - water thoroughly when the first few centimetres of the substrate are dry, then water very sparingly after the pre-winter watering.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for shrubs, in spring.
- Pruning: rarely necessary - light pruning just before growth resumes, in spring, keeps it more compact.
- Repotting: every two to three years, in spring, in a wider pot, using potting soil for shrubs.
In very cold weather, it may lose leaves along an entire stem: this is not a dead branch; it will produce new leaves in spring.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its pink and white tones soften a foliage arrangement: choosing neighbours according to exposure lets you pair it with plants that enjoy the same light.
- For a pink palette, place a 'Eve Price' laurustinus behind it - its bright pink buds and pale pink flowers from November to March echo the nandina's colours.
- For late-winter flowering, plant a Hellebore 'Double Ellen Pink' at its base — its pale pink double flowers from February to April herald the first pink shoots.
- To dress the edge of the pot, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' — its cream edge complements the white marbling of the leaves.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot — the dark grey makes the pink and white foliage stand out.
Paired with Nandina Obsessed in the same planter, it creates a gradient from bright red to pink and white.
Verdeia tips
- Prune branches that have turned green again: on a variegated shrub, a completely green stem is more vigorous and eventually takes over. Remove it at the base as soon as it appears.
- Give it in spring: in full pink growth, it makes a more original gift than a bouquet. Our selection of gift plants and their meanings helps you choose according to the occasion.
- Keep it out of reach of animals: all parts of the nandina are toxic to dogs, cats, and birds if consumed.
