Rosmarinus officinalis 'Prostratus' is trailing rosemary, whose flexible branches cascade down instead of growing upright. Trained on a stem, it forms a cascade of aromatic foliage suspended at the top of a clear trunk. A cultivar from the Mediterranean basin, it brings a sense of movement to the Mediterranean garden that few species can provide.
Its main difference from classic rosemary lies entirely in this habit: while the typical species raises its stems upwards, 'Prostratus' lets them trail down 40 to 60 cm. Trained on a stem, the effect becomes spectacular — a plant fountain flowing from the crown.
Which rosemary should you choose?
Rosemary comes in two very different habits, both trained on a stem:
- 'Prostratus' on a stem (this plant) — cascading, trailing branches (H70-90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most spectacular effect, for a raised pot.
- Rosemary officinalis on a stem — dense, upright crown (2 sizes, from H45 cm | Pot Ø14 cm to H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The classic habit.
Exposure & location
Rosemary is a full-sun plant, and the intensity of its aroma depends directly on it. The more light it receives, the more concentrated its essential oils become and the more abundant its flowering.
- Exposure: full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Location: patio, south-facing balcony, low wall, entrance — choose an elevated position to let the branches cascade down.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -8 °C — slightly less hardy than upright rosemary, and should be protected in the event of prolonged frost.
- Soil type: light, well-drained and rather poor — Mediterranean potting soil mixed with sand or perlite.
The cascading habit is only visible when the plant is elevated: placed on the ground, the cascade spreads out and loses all its effect.
Watering & care
Rosemary tolerates drought remarkably well once established, but remains highly sensitive to excess water. A well-draining substrate is the essential prerequisite, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate dry out between waterings, once or twice a week in summer and much less in winter.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes, a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom, and a saucer emptied regularly.
- Pruning: shorten the longest stems after flowering to prevent them from becoming bare at the base.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they ruin the standard form.
- Harvesting: regularly pick the tips of the stems, which encourages branching.
- Fertilizer: very little — overly rich soil encourages foliage at the expense of aroma.
Never prune into bare old wood: rosemary will not regrow from a leafless branch, and the cut leaves a permanent gap.
