Frequently asked questions
Is Calathea safe for pets? Yes, Calathea is completely non-toxic to cats and dogs — a valuable advantage that makes it an ideal plant for homes with pets.
Why do Calathea leaves move at night? Calatheas are nyctinastic plants — they fold their leaves at nightfall and unfold them at sunrise. This movement is natural and related to changes in light. It’s one of the most fascinating features of this plant family.

🌿 Spectacular green and silver bands • 🌙 Leaves that fold up at night • ☀️ Indirect light to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Calathea Fasciata, or Peacock Plant, is a tropical plant native to the humid forests of South America. Its elongated leaves feature alternating dark green and silver bands that create a graphic, luminous striped pattern. Like all Calatheas, its leaves fold up at night and unfold during the day — a living, soothing plant movement. H50 cm | Pot Ø14 cm.
Non-toxic to pets. Pair it with other Calatheas.
Which Calathea variety should you choose?
The Calathea genus comes in a wide variety of patterns. All Calathea varieties:
- Calathea Fasciata (this plant) — striped green and silver bands, elongated leaves. The most graphic and the brightest.
- Calathea Orbifolia — large, round leaves with elegant silver stripes. The most imposing.
- Calathea Medallion — green, purple, and silver medallion patterns. The most colorful.
- Calathea Ornata — dark green foliage with pink stripes. The most romantic.
- Calathea Majestica 'Princeps' — spectacular pink stripes and purple undersides. The most regal.
- Calathea Stripestar — spectacular white stripes, large size. The brightest.
- Calathea Bluegrass — blue-green foliage with silver stripes. The most original.
- Calathea Warscewiczii — dark green velvety foliage with purple undersides. The softest to the touch.
Exposure & placement
- Ideal exposure: indirect light to partial shade — never direct sun.
- Tolerates: low light.
- Avoid: direct sun, which burns and fades the silver stripes.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Humidity: 60-70% recommended — bright bathrooms are ideal.
Bright bathrooms are perfect for Calatheas — natural humidity encourages lush foliage. Its ideal location depends on the balance between light and humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever waterlogging it.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Water: soft water is essential — hard water causes characteristic brown edges.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential.
- Humidity: mist the foliage regularly.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
Brown edges on the leaves almost always indicate hard water or air that is too dry. Most problems can be quickly identified with a good diagnosis.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its luminous silver stripes create an immediate graphic focal point — a plant that stands out even in dark spaces.
- In an arrangement: pair it with a Calathea Medallion or a Calathea Makoyana — the same care, but very different patterns for a collection of graphic Calatheas.
- Ideal pot: matte white, gray, or beige ceramic — neutral tones highlight the silver bands without competing with them.
- Style: graphic, elegant, urban jungle — its stripes complement all contemporary interiors.
Its leaves fold up at night and unfold during the day — observe this lively movement and place the plant somewhere clearly visible. Pair it with Calatheas and Marantas.
Verdeia tips
- Limescale-free water is essential — use filtered or rainwater. Limescale is the main cause of brown edges and light spots on the leaves.
- High humidity in winter — heating dries out the air and causes brown edges. Mist regularly or place a humidifier nearby. The right care practices vary with the season, following the care calendar.
- Observe the movement of the leaves — they fold up at night and unfold during the day. If they remain folded during the day, this is often a sign of insufficient humidity.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.

What should I do when my plant arrives?
