🌸 Large soft-pink flowers, 12–15 cm, from June to September • 🔄 Flowers on current-year wood — easy pruning • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to –20 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Clematis 'Hagley Hybrid', or large-flowered pink clematis, is a deciduous climbing plant resulting from horticultural selection in Europe (the United Kingdom), and is among the most flowering varieties in the collection. Its large, soft-pink, star-shaped flowers, 12 to 15 cm across, with slightly wavy tepals and a contrasting center of purple stamens, bloom in successive waves from June to September on the current year's shoots. Among the clematis in the clematis collection, it is the most generous and compact pink variety.
Undemanding and very easy to prune (group 3, short cutback in February), it grows equally well in a large container or in the ground — an ideal choice for a balcony or terrace in partial shade.
Which large-flowered clematis should you choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection offers many varieties in distinct colors. Here's how to place the 'Hagley Hybrid' among the catalog references:
- Clematis 'Hagley Hybrid' (this plant) — soft pink flowers with purple stamens, 12–15 cm, June to September, group 3 (short pruning in February). The most flowering pink variety, compact (2 to 3 m), ideal for a pot or small space.
- Clematis 'Niobe' — large, deep velvet-red flowers, group 2, reblooming from May to September. The choice for an intense, dramatic color on a pergola.
- Clematis 'The President' — large, intense violet flowers, reblooming from June to September. The choice for a striking violet-and-pink contrast paired with the 'Hagley Hybrid' on the same support.
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' — large white flowers striped with green, early flowering from May to June. The choice for a white-and-pink duo that starts blooming as early as May.
Exposure & location
The 'Hagley Hybrid' is the clematis best suited to partial shade — its soft pink is even brighter and more intense when sheltered from scorching full sun. Its moderate growth (2 to 3 m) makes it particularly suitable for small trellises, containers, and balconies where more vigorous varieties would be difficult to control.
- Exposure: bright partial shade or gentle sun — avoid the intense midday sun, which fades the flowers.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, pergola or arch — the leaf stalks twine around any slender support on their own.
- Soil: fertile, moist and well drained — keep the base in the shade or mulched.
- In a pot: large container at least 30 cm wide — one of the clematis varieties best suited to container growing.
Place a low-growing perennial or a piece of slate at the base to keep the roots cool — roots that overheat in full sun are the main cause of clematis decline in summer.
Watering & care
'Hagley Hybrid' belongs to pruning group 3 — it flowers only on the current year's growth. Its pruning is the simplest of all: cut back to 30–50 cm above the ground in February-March, just above a pair of buds. In a pot, the finger test helps calibrate watering safely. Leaves that turn yellow during the season often have one of the usual causes: soil that is too dry or insufficient rooting.
- Watering: regular during dry periods — keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged.
- Pruning: cut back to 30–50 cm above the ground in February-March — all stems, every year.
- Fertilizer: organic or potassium-rich fertilizer in spring to support summer flowering.
- Mulching: 10 cm around the base to retain moisture and reduce watering.
Unlike group 2 clematis, 'Hagley Hybrid' is pruned completely each year without risk — the shorter you prune it in February, the more vigorously the plant regrows and the denser the flowering from the base.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The luminous soft pink of 'Hagley Hybrid' creates gentle, romantic harmonies — in a Mediterranean garden or on a flowering jungle terrace, its color naturally pairs with dark foliage and complementary blooms.
- For a fragrant pink-and-white pergola, pair it with the evergreen Clematis armandii on the same support — armandii opens with its fragrant white flowers in February-March, then 'Hagley Hybrid' takes over with its soft pink blooms from June to September against a backdrop of evergreen foliage.
- For an intense pink and purple contrast, the purple Clematis 'The President' blooms simultaneously from June to September — the two tones complement each other perfectly on the same trellis without competing.
- To highlight the soft pink in a pot, a dark green or anthracite ceramic planter creates the brightest contrast — the dark background makes the delicacy of the pink and the brilliance of the purple stamens stand out.
- To create a plant backdrop that enhances the flowering, plant it in front of the evergreen Lonicera henryi — the honeysuckle's dense, glossy dark green foliage creates a natural setting that intensifies the brightness of the clematis's soft pink.
'Hagley Hybrid' flowers better and for longer in partial shade than in full sun — it is one of the few large-flowered clematis truly recommended for east- or west-facing balconies and terraces.
Verdeia tips
- Cut back hard every February without hesitation: 'Hagley Hybrid' flowers on the current season's shoots — the shorter the pruning in February (30–50 cm), the more vigorous new stems the plant produces from the base, and the denser and more evenly distributed the flowering across the entire support.
- Guide new stems onto the support from March: young spring shoots are fragile — an hour of training in March prevents tangling that is impossible to untangle in May and ensures even coverage of the trellis or pergola.
- Choose partial shade for a more intense pink: in the summer sun, the tepals quickly become pale and lose their brightness — an east- or west-facing position, or beneath a filtered pergola, preserves this variety's characteristic soft pink throughout the season.
