Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Clematis montana 'Fragrant Spring' not blooming? The most common cause is pruning done in autumn or winter that removed the flower buds — always wait until flowering is finished in May-June before pruning.
Can Clematis montana grow in a pot on a balcony? Yes, in a large container at least 40 cm deep with regular watering and a sturdy support capable of holding 5 to 8 meters of vine at maturity.

🌸 Spectacular pale pink flowering in April-May • 🌙 Soft and sweet fragrance • 🚀 Fast growth • ❄️ Hardy to –20 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis montana 'Fragrant Spring', or fragrant mountain clematis, is a vigorous climbing vine native to the mountains of Central Asia, selected for its spectacular spring flowering. In April and May, it is covered with a multitude of small tender pink to pale pink slightly fragrant flowers, creating a true floral curtain on any vertical surface. Among the many varieties in the clematis collection, it is the most vigorous and generous in spring.
Quick to cover a pergola or fence and hardy to –20 °C, it’s one of the most effective climbers to quickly green a large wall or terrace in a single season.
Which clematis to choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection offers many varieties with distinct flowering periods and colors. Here’s how to place 'Fragrant Spring' among the main catalog references:
- Clematis montana 'Fragrant Spring' (this plant) — fragrant pale pink flowers, flowering in April-May on last year’s wood, very vigorous growth (5 to 8 m). The most generous and fastest spring variety.
- Clematis montana 'Grandiflora' — slightly larger white flowers, same spring flowering period. The choice for a purer and brighter atmosphere.
- Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' — glossy dark green evergreen foliage, very fragrant pale pink flowers in March-April. The evergreen variety for a green screen all year with early flowering.
- Clematis 'The President' — large purple flowers from June to September, remontant summer bloom. The choice for intense color all summer contrasting with a spring 'Fragrant Spring'.
Exposure & location
The Clematis montana 'Fragrant Spring' is a particularly vigorous climber — it can cover 5 to 8 m in a few years and becomes heavy on its support. A sturdy trellis, a robust arch, or a well-anchored pergola are essential from planting. Like all clematis, it thrives with its base in the shade and stems in the sun.
- Exposure: sun or bright partial shade — base in shade, stems exposed.
- Support: trellis, pergola, arch, or sturdy wire mesh — the vine wraps around any thin support by its petioles.
- Soil: fertile, fresh, and well-drained — avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
- In pots: large container at least 40 cm, fresh substrate renewed every 2 years.
Mulch generously around the base with 10 to 15 cm of organic material — root coolness is the main condition for abundant flowering in this variety.
Watering & care
The clematis montana blooms on last year’s wood — this is the crucial point for pruning. Any severe pruning before flowering removes already formed flower buds. In pots, keep the substrate regularly moist — the finger test is the best guide to avoid both dryness and overwatering. If the foliage yellows out of season, check the causes of yellowing — often heavy soil or a deficiency.
- Watering: regular for the first two years — moderate afterwards, the soil should stay moist but not waterlogged.
- Pruning: only after flowering (May-June) — never prune in autumn or winter as this will remove all the next flowering.
- Fertilizer: organic in spring before flowering to support new shoot growth.
- Hardiness: down to –20 °C — no protection needed in open ground.
'Fragrant Spring' belongs to clematis pruning group 1 — it is only pruned after flowering and only to control volume, never to renew the bloom.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The pale pink bloom and delicate fragrance of 'Fragrant Spring' create a romantic and light atmosphere in spring — in a Mediterranean garden as well as on a flowering jungle terrace, it brings the spectacular touch of the early season.
- For a flowering pergola from spring to autumn, pair it with Clematis 'The President' violet on the same support — 'Fragrant Spring' covers the pergola in pink in April-May, then 'The President' takes over with its large violet flowers from June to September.
- For a persistent green backdrop that highlights the spring bloom, plant it in front of a Lonicera henryi evergreen — the shiny dark green leaves of the honeysuckle enhance the lightness of the pale pink flowers by contrast.
- For a fragrant spring composition with double flowering, pair it with Lonicera 'Serotina' — the clematis opens the show in April-May with its lightly scented pink flowers, then the honeysuckle takes over with its intense fragrance in June.
- To enhance the pale pink flowers in a pot, a slate gray or midnight blue ceramic container creates the sharpest contrast with the pastel tones of the spring bloom.
At the end of flowering, the stems covered with fallen sepals form small decorative silver fluffy fruits — leave them in place until post-flowering pruning to extend the plant's interest until June.
Verdeia tips
- Never prune in autumn or winter: 'Fragrant Spring' forms its flower buds in autumn on the current year's wood — winter pruning would completely remove the following spring's flowering, a very common mistake with group 1 clematis.
- Train the stems as soon as winter ends: in spring, guide the new shoots growing on the support before they tangle — one hour of training in March avoids several hours of impossible untangling in May.
- Provide a support sized for 5 to 8 m from planting: 'Fragrant Spring' is one of the most vigorous clematis in the catalog — a support that is too small will be overwhelmed in two seasons and very difficult to enlarge without damaging the plant.
