Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Clematis 'Miss Bateman' grow in the shade? Yes, it is one of the few large-flowered clematis that blooms abundantly in partial shade or north-facing exposure — its satin white is even brighter and more intense sheltered from full sun.
When to prune the Clematis 'Miss Bateman'? Cut back the faded stems by one-third in June after the first bloom to encourage the August-September regrowth — in February, remove only dead stems without cutting back completely.

🤍 Large satin white flowers 12–15 cm • 🔄 Two waves of bloom May–June then August–September • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to –20 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis 'Miss Bateman', or elegant white clematis, is a deciduous climber from a horticultural selection in Europe (United Kingdom), among the brightest in the clematis collection. Its large satin white flowers 12 to 15 cm, marked with a light green central vein and a very contrasting deep red-purple stamen heart, bloom in two waves — May-June on last year’s wood, then August-September on this year’s shoots.
Compact (2 to 3 m), easy to prune and particularly luminous in partial shade, it is one of the clematis best suited for small balconies and terraces facing east or north.
Which large-flowered clematis to choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection offers many varieties with distinct colors. Here’s how to place 'Miss Bateman' among the catalog references:
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' (this plant) — satin white flowers with deep red-purple stamens, 12–15 cm, group 2, two waves of bloom May-June and August-September. The brightest white variety, ideal for partially shaded exposures.
- Clematis 'Niobe' — large deep velvet red flowers, reblooming May-September. The choice for a spectacular white-red contrast paired with 'Miss Bateman' on the same trellis.
- Clematis 'The President' — large intense violet flowers, reblooming June-September. The choice for a very graphic white-violet duo in simultaneous bloom.
- Clematis montana 'Fragrant Spring' — very fragrant pale pink flowers in April-May, very vigorous (5 to 8 m). The choice for a spectacular spring bloom before 'Miss Bateman'.
Exposure & location
The 'Miss Bateman' is one of the few large-flowered clematis whose color is more beautiful and luminous in partial shade than in full sun — the satin white shines with a natural glow without being faded by heat. Its compact growth makes it particularly suitable for small spaces and containers. Its petioles coil by themselves around any thin support.
- Exposure: bright partial shade or gentle sun — the white flowers are especially stunning sheltered from the harsh midday sun.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, arch or pergola — compact growth suitable for small supports.
- Soil: fertile, fresh, and well-drained — base in shade or mulched.
- In pots: large container of at least 30 cm — one of the clematis varieties best suited for container growing.
Place a flat slate or ground cover at the base to keep roots cool — cool roots are the main condition for a generous double bloom.
Watering & maintenance
'Miss Bateman' belongs to group 2 — it first blooms on last year's wood (May-June), then on this year's shoots (August-September). Its pruning is light and optional: remove faded stems by one third after the first wave to trigger the rebloom. In pots, the finger test helps calibrate watering. If foliage yellows out of season, the usual causes are too dry soil or lack of potassium.
- Watering: regular, keep substrate fresh but never waterlogged.
- Pruning: light after the first wave in June — cut back faded stems by one third to trigger the August-September rebloom.
- Winter pruning: optional in February — remove only dead or weakest stems 15–20 cm from the ground.
- Fertilizer: rich in potassium in spring and after the first bloom.
Never cut back 'Miss Bateman' completely in autumn — unlike group 3, it first blooms on last year's wood, and a hard prune in autumn removes the first and most beautiful wave of May-June.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The bright satin white of 'Miss Bateman' and its purple-red stamen center make it a structural plant that creates strong contrasts with all colorful blooms — in a Mediterranean garden as well as on a flowering jungle terrace.
- For a spectacular white and red contrast on a trellis, pair it with the velvet red Clematis 'Niobe' on the same support — both varieties bloom simultaneously from June to September, and the satin white of 'Miss Bateman' intensifies the deep red of 'Niobe' by contrast.
- For a white and fragrant pergola from spring to autumn, pair it with the evergreen Clematis armandii — armandii blooms with its fragrant white flowers in February-March, then 'Miss Bateman' takes over in May-June with its large white flowers with a purple heart against a backdrop of evergreen foliage.
- To amplify the brightness of the white in shaded exposure, plant it in front of a Lonicera henryi evergreen — the shiny dark green foliage of the honeysuckle forms a natural frame that intensifies the white's brightness and highlights the contrast with the purple stamens.
- To enhance white flowers in a pot, a matte black or midnight blue ceramic container creates the most striking contrast — the dark background intensifies the satin white and pearly reflections of the tepals.
At the end of flowering, the silvery feathery fruits of 'Miss Bateman' persist for several weeks — their decorative lightness extends the plant's interest until winter pruning.
Verdeia tips
- Remove faded flowers after the first wave to trigger reblooming: cut back the faded stems by one third in June as soon as the first flowers fade — this simple step triggers a second wave of white flowers in August-September, extending the season by two months.
- Train the stems as soon as winter ends: guide each new stem onto the support from March before they tangle — one hour of training in spring ensures even coverage of the trellis and well-distributed flowering across the surface.
- Enjoy north or east exposure: 'Miss Bateman' is one of the few large-flowered clematis that blooms abundantly without full sun — place it on a wall facing east or north to green these challenging spots where few flowering climbers thrive.
