Frequently Asked Questions
When should you prune Clematis montana 'Grandiflora'? Prune only after flowering in June to control size — never prune in autumn or winter, as 'Grandiflora' forms its flower buds in autumn and any winter pruning will completely remove the following spring's blooms.
Can Clematis montana 'Grandiflora' grow in a pot on a balcony? Yes, in a large container at least 40 cm wide with a sturdy support and more frequent watering than in the ground — its 5 to 8 m vigor requires a strong structure from planting.

Clematis montana ‘Grandiflora’ — Vigorous & fragrant white clematis
🤍 Large white flowers 8–10 cm from May to June • 🌿 Very vigorous climber — up to 8 m • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to –20 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis montana 'Grandiflora', or white mountain clematis, is a deciduous climber native to Asia (northern India and Himalayas), introduced to Europe in 1844. It’s the form with the largest flowers in the montana group — its star-shaped pure white flowers 8 to 10 cm across, with cream anthers, bloom en masse from May to June and emit a light vanilla scent. Among the clematis in the clematis collection, it’s the most vigorous variety for quickly covering a large area.
Undemanding, hardy down to –20 °C, and practically no mandatory pruning, it’s the ideal choice to dress a large pergola, wall, or facade on a large balcony or terrace.
Which Clematis montana should you choose?
Verdeia offers two varieties of Clematis montana with distinct characteristics. Here’s how to compare them:
- Clematis montana 'Grandiflora' (this plant) — pure white flowers 8–10 cm, lightly scented with vanilla, blooms May–June, very vigorous (5 to 8 m). The variety to cover a large area with the largest white flowers of the montana group.
- Clematis montana 'Fragrant Spring' — smaller pale pink flowers, more intense and sweet fragrance, same vigor. The choice for a touch of pink color and a stronger scent on a pergola or wall.
Exposure & location
The 'Grandiflora' is one of the most vigorous climbers in the catalog — it can reach 5 to 8 m and becomes very heavy on its support. A solid trellis, sturdy pergola, or sufficiently large tree is essential. Its pure white is especially bright in partial shade, where the flowers stand out against the dark green foliage without being washed out by heat.
- Exposure: full sun or partial shade — sheltered from cold winds.
- Support: pergola, large trellis, wire mesh, or sturdy tree — sized for 5 to 8 m and several tens of kilos.
- Soil: fertile, cool, and well-drained — base in shade or mulched.
- In a pot: large container at least 40 cm wide with a sturdy support — requires more frequent watering than in the ground.
Mulch generously around the base with 10 to 15 cm of organic material — keeping the roots cool is the key to abundant flowering and sustained vigor throughout the season.
Watering & care
The 'Grandiflora' belongs to group 1 — it flowers on last year's wood and requires practically no mandatory pruning. The absolute rule: never prune in autumn or winter, or you risk removing all the flower buds already formed. In a pot, the finger test helps calibrate watering. If the foliage yellows during the season, the usual causes are too dry soil or exhausted substrate.
- Watering: regular for the first two years — moderate afterwards, keep the substrate slightly moist.
- Pruning: only after flowering in June to contain the volume — light, at most one third.
- Pruning forbidden: never in autumn or winter — it would completely remove the flowering of the following spring.
- Fertilizer: organic in spring before flowering to support the growth of new stems.
The 'Grandiflora' is beautiful when it grows freely without pruning on a large support — if space allows, let it develop naturally and prune only what overflows.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The pure and bright white of the 'Grandiflora', its slightly scented star-shaped flowers, and its spectacular vigor make it a major structural plant — in a Mediterranean garden as well as on a large jungle terrace, it immediately imposes a strong visual presence.
- For a flowering pergola from spring to autumn, pair it with the Clematis 'The President' purple on the same support — the 'Grandiflora' opens with its generous white in May-June, then 'The President' takes over with its large purple flowers from June to September.
- For a fragrant white backdrop under which a colorful climber can grow, pair it with the Clematis 'Niobe' red — the white of the 'Grandiflora' in May-June precedes and announces the velvet red of the 'Niobe' from June to September, on the same wall.
- For a persistent and flowering green wall in two stages, plant it in front of a Lonicera henryi evergreen — the shiny dark green honeysuckle foliage provides the background all year and intensifies the white of the clematis flowers in spring.
- To enhance the white of the potted flowers, a large anthracite or dark green ceramic planter creates the most striking contrast with the pure white flowers and cream anthers of the 'Grandiflora'.
After flowering, the silvery feathery fruits of 'Grandiflora' remain on the stems for several weeks — their decorative lightness extends the plant’s interest until July.
Verdeia tips
- Install a support sized for 5 to 8 m at planting: 'Grandiflora' is one of the most vigorous clematis in the catalog — a support that is too small will be full within two seasons and very difficult to enlarge without uprooting the plant.
- Never prune in autumn or winter: 'Grandiflora' forms its flower buds in autumn on the current year's wood — winter pruning completely removes the following spring’s bloom, the most common mistake with group 1 clematis.
- Train the stems as soon as winter ends: guide the new stems on the support from March before they tangle — one hour of training in spring ensures even coverage and well-distributed flowering over the entire support surface.

🤍 Fragrant white flowers • 🌿 Vigorous climber • 🏙️ Ideal for pergolas & urban walls • ☀️ Sun / Partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to −20 °C
The Clematis montana ‘Grandiflora’ is a spectacular variety with small star-shaped white flowers, known for their abundant bloom and delicate fragrance. From spring, it is covered with a cloud of bright flowers that transform walls, fences, or pergolas into an enchanting plant decor.
Very hardy and fast-growing, it easily climbs up to 5 to 6 m high, forming a green and flowering curtain ideal for the city. Undemanding, it is perfect for dressing a wall, a pergola, or even a large pot on an urban terrace.
Exposure & location
- Exposure: full sun or partial shade, preferably sheltered from cold winds.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, pergola, or fence to allow the plant to climb freely.
- Tip: roots in shade, head in sun — the golden rule for clematis for spectacular flowering.
- Growing: in open ground or large pot on balcony and terrace.
To keep foliage vigorous and flowers abundant, avoid scorching exposures and keep the base cool.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular the first year and in summer, keeping the soil slightly moist.
- Soil: rich, fresh, and well-drained.
- Pruning: light after spring flowering to encourage new shoots.
- Hardiness: excellent, tolerates down to −20 °C without special protection.
Mulch or a groundcover plant at the base (hosta, geranium, heuchera) helps keep cool and promotes flowering.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
- With a light climbing rose for a romantic and fragrant duo.
- With a wisteria or star jasmine to stagger the blooms.
- With spring shrubs (lilac, mock orange) for a “white cloud” effect.
- With a summer clematis (like Clematis ‘Niobe’) to extend flowering into autumn.
On a pergola or trellis, it offers a curtain of naturally charming and romantic scented white flowers.
Verdeia tips
- Guide young stems from planting for even coverage of the support.
- Protect the roots from direct sun with a low plant or mulch.
- Prune lightly after flowering to stimulate vigor and maintain a balanced shape.
- Avoid waterlogged soils: clematis prefers an airy and well-drained substrate.
Its spring flowering pairs beautifully with light wood furniture or terracotta pots for a soft and natural atmosphere.
