Frequently Asked Questions
When to prune the Clematis 'Niobe'? Prune lightly by one-third after the first flowering in June for the remontant effect — in February, an optional pruning to 50 cm renews the framework without removing the first wave of May.
Can the Clematis 'Niobe' be grown in a pot on a balcony? Yes, in a large container of at least 30 cm with good drainage, regular watering, and a sturdy support — its moderate height of 2 to 3 m makes it the clematis best suited for container growing.

🌹 Large velvet red flowers 12–15 cm from May to September • 🔄 Repeat blooming after pruning • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy to –20 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis 'Niobe', or large-flowered red clematis, is a deciduous climber of European horticultural origin, selected for the exceptional intensity of its flowers — deep velvet red with purple highlights, 12 to 15 cm in diameter, with a very contrasting golden stamen center. Its long flowering period from May to September, with repeat blooms after each light pruning, makes it one of the most generous clematis in the clematis collection.
Compact (2 to 3 m), easy to train, and hardy to –20 °C, it’s the ideal choice to bring intense and sophisticated color to a trellis or pergola on a balcony or terrace.
Which large-flowered clematis to choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection offers many varieties with distinct colors. Here’s how to place 'Niobe' among the large-flowered summer clematis in the catalog:
- Clematis 'Niobe' (this plant) — deep velvet red flowers 12 to 15 cm, blooms May-September, repeat blooming. The most intense and longest-flowering variety among red clematis.
- Clematis 'Hagley Hybrid' — cardinal red-pink flowers, slightly smaller, blooms June-September. The choice for a softer palette and very compact habit.
- Clematis 'The President' — large intense violet flowers, blooms June-September repeatedly. The choice for a blue-violet contrast complementing the red 'Niobe' on the same pergola.
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' — large white flowers streaked with green, blooms May-June then again later. The choice for a striking white-red contrast paired with 'Niobe'.
Exposure & location
The Clematis 'Niobe' blooms best in sun or bright partial shade — too much shade dulls the intensity of the red and reduces flowering. Like all large-flowered clematis, it prefers its base in shade and stems exposed to light. Its moderate size (2 to 3 m) makes it especially suitable for small supports and pots.
- Exposure: sun or bright partial shade — base in shade, stems exposed.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, pergola, or arch — the petioles coil themselves around any thin support.
- Soil: fertile, fresh, and well-drained — base in shade or mulched.
- In pots: large container of at least 30 cm, substrate renewed every 2 years.
Mulch generously around the base with 10 to 15 cm of organic material — root freshness is the main condition for a long and dense flowering throughout the season.
Watering & care
The 'Niobe' belongs to clematis pruning group 2 — it blooms on last year’s wood AND on this year’s shoots. This feature allows remontant flowering: a light prune after the first wave in June triggers a second bloom in August-September. In pots, the finger test helps calibrate watering. If the foliage yellows out of season, check the usual causes — often heavy soil or potassium deficiency.
- Watering: regular during dry periods — keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged.
- Pruning: light after the first flowering wave in June — cut back by one third to trigger the second bloom.
- Winter pruning: optional — cut back to 50 cm from the ground in February to renew the framework.
- Fertilizer: rich in potassium in spring and after the first bloom to support the second flowering.
Never cut back the 'Niobe' completely in autumn — unlike group 3 clematis, it forms its first buds on last year’s wood and a hard prune in autumn would remove the first wave in May.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep velvet red of the 'Niobe' creates powerful color contrasts — in a Mediterranean garden as well as on a flowering jungle terrace, it immediately stands out as the focal point of any arrangement.
- For a spectacular white-red contrast on a pergola, pair it with the Clematis armandii on the same support — the armandii covers the pergola with fragrant white flowers in February-March, then the 'Niobe' takes over with its intense red from May to September, against a backdrop of evergreen foliage all year round.
- For a very intense red and purple duo, the Clematis 'The President' purple blooms simultaneously from June to September — the two colors complement each other without competing and double the floral density on the same trellis.
- To showcase the velvet red in a pot, a slate gray or anthracite ceramic container creates the sharpest contrast — the dark background intensifies the brightness of the red and the purple highlights of the petals.
- For a lasting backdrop that enhances flowering, plant it in front of a Lonicera henryi — the shiny dark green evergreen honeysuckle foliage forms a natural frame that highlights the intensity of the velvet red throughout the season.
At the end of flowering, the clematis’s silvery feathery fruits persist for several weeks — leave them in place to extend decorative interest until winter pruning.
Verdeia tips
- Lightly prune after the first flowering to trigger remontant bloom: cut back stems by one third in June as soon as the first flowers fade — this simple step triggers a second wave of deep velvet red flowers in August-September, extending the season by two months.
- Protect the stems in winter without cutting them back completely: 'Niobe' is group 2 and first flowers on last year’s wood — in February, optional pruning to 50 cm above ground renews the framework, but hard pruning removes the first wave of May flowers.
- Install the support before planting: clematis stems are fragile and hard to move once they start twining — fix the trellis or pergola first, then plant and immediately guide the first stems in the right direction.
