💜 Pale blue-mauve flowers 6–8 cm from June to September • 🔄 Abundant blooming on current year wood — easy pruning • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to –20 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis 'Justa', or compact lilac clematis, is a deciduous climbing hybrid of the Viticella group, from a horticultural selection in Europe (Lithuania). Its pale blue-mauve flowers 6 to 8 cm, with slightly wavy sepals and pale yellow anthers, bloom massively from June to September on the current year's shoots. Among the clematis in the clematis collection, it is the most compact variety and best suited for small spaces.
Easy to prune (group 3, short cut in February), vigorous and undemanding, it suits both large containers and open ground and adapts to all exposures of a balcony or terrace.
Which clematis to choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection offers many varieties with distinct colors and blooming periods. Here is how to place 'Justa' among the catalog references:
- Clematis 'Justa' (this plant) — pale blue-mauve flowers 6–8 cm, group 3, blooming June-September, very compact habit (max 2 m). The smallest variety best suited for pots and small spaces.
- Clematis 'The President' — large intense violet flowers 15 cm, remontant June-September. The choice for a deeper color and much larger flowers on a pergola.
- Clematis 'Niobe' — large velvet red flowers 12–15 cm, remontant May-September. The choice for a spectacular blue-mauve and red contrast on the same support.
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' — large satin white flowers 12–15 cm, two waves in May-June and August-September. The choice for a very bright blue-mauve and white duo with complementary blooming.
Exposure & location
'Justa' is one of the most tolerant clematis — it blooms equally well in full sun or bright partial shade. Its very compact habit (up to 2 m) makes it especially suitable for small containers and limited supports. Its petioles coil by themselves around any thin support.
- Exposure: full sun or partial shade — the blue-mauve colors are more intense and long-lasting in light shade.
- Support: small trellis, wire mesh, arch, or railing — its compact habit suits light structures.
- Soil: fertile, cool, and well-drained — base in shade or mulched.
- In pots: large container at least 25 cm — one of the clematis best suited for container growing.
Protect the roots with mulch or a low perennial at the base — root coolness is the main condition for abundant and continuous flowering from June to September.
Watering & care
'Justa' belongs to group 3 — it blooms only on the current year's shoots. Its pruning is the simplest of all: a short cut back to 30–50 cm from the ground each February. In pots, the finger test helps gauge watering safely. If the foliage yellows during the season, the usual causes are too dry soil or depleted substrate in pots.
- Watering: regular, keep substrate cool but never waterlogged.
- Pruning: cut back short to 30–50 cm from the ground in February — all stems, every year without exception.
- Fertilizer: rich in potassium in spring to support the long summer bloom.
- Mulching: 10 cm at the base to keep cool and reduce watering.
The more you prune short in February, the more vigorously 'Justa' regrows with many flower-covered stems from the base — an unpruned plant ends up flowering only at the top with a bare base.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The soft and bright blue-mauve of 'Justa' creates subtle and romantic harmonies — in a Mediterranean garden as well as on a flowering jungle terrace, its small delicate flowers naturally complement larger blooms and contrasting foliage.
- For a spectacular blue and red duo on a trellis, pair it with the velvet red Clematis 'Niobe' on the same support — the small blue-mauve flowers of 'Justa' and the large deep red flowers of 'Niobe' bloom simultaneously from June to September, creating a lively warm/cool contrast.
- For a lasting backdrop that enhances the blue flowers, plant it in front of a Lonicera henryi evergreen — the shiny dark green honeysuckle foliage creates a natural frame that intensifies the brightness of the blue-mauve throughout the season.
- For a composition on a partially shaded balcony, pair it with Passiflora caerulea on the same support — the two blue blooms complement each other with radically different flower structures (small and simple vs. large and graphic) for a very rich effect.
- To enhance the blue-lilac in a pot, a terracotta or ochre ceramic container creates a warm resonance that intensifies the coolness of the blue-lilac flowers by contrast and adds depth to the arrangement.
At the end of flowering, the silvery feathery fruits of 'Justa' persist on the stems for several weeks — their decorative lightness extends the plant's interest until the winter pruning in February.
Verdeia tips
- Prune short every February without exception: 'Justa' is group 3 and blooms on the current year's shoots — pruning to 30–50 cm from the ground each winter is essential for dense flowering from the base, not just high up on a bare stem.
- Train the stems on the support from March: the new spring shoots are fragile and easily tangle — guide each stem onto the trellis as soon as it reaches 20 cm to ensure even coverage and avoid the impossible-to-untangle mess in May.
- Water more frequently in pots than in the ground: in large containers, the substrate dries out much faster than in the ground during midsummer — watering every two days in hot weather is often necessary to maintain the abundant flowering typical of this variety.
