Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the tips of my Asplenium fronds turning brown? It’s almost always due to low humidity — dry indoor air from heating is the main cause. Increase misting frequency, place the pot on a tray of damp clay pebbles, or move the plant to a more humid room like the bathroom.
Can you place an Asplenium in a room without windows? A room with no natural light at all is not suitable — Asplenium tolerates low light but needs at least some indirect light to maintain growth. Quality artificial light (full spectrum, 12 hours per day) can compensate for the lack of a window.

🌿 Bright green wavy fronds • 🎨 Elegant rosette habit • ☀️ Partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Asplenium nidus 'Crissie', also called Bird's Nest Fern, is an elegant and graphic indoor fern native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Australia, where it naturally grows as an epiphyte in shaded understories. Its bright green delicately wavy fronds with crisped edges form a spectacular rosette that evokes a nest — a soothing sculptural effect that brings tropical freshness to any room.
Air-purifying, non-toxic, and particularly comfortable in humid rooms. Available in two sizes: H40 cm | Pot Ø17 cm and H55 cm | Pot Ø23 cm. Discover it in our indoor ferns collection and in our bathroom plants selection.
Which Asplenium variety to choose?
The Asplenium genus offers several varieties with distinct frond shapes and textures:
- Asplenium nidus 'Crissie' (this plant) — elegant wavy fronds, graphic crisped edges. The classic wavy version.
- Asplenium 'Campio' — very wavy and spectacular fronds, compact habit. The version with pronounced waves.
- Asplenium 'Crispy Wave' — very crisped and dense fronds, compact bushy habit. The ultra-graphic miniature version.
- Asplenium antiquum — smooth and shiny fronds, elegant classic habit. The traditional smooth version.
- Asplenium 'Osaka' — slightly wavy fronds, balanced and compact habit. Between smooth and wavy.
- Asplenium nidus — broad smooth fronds, generous habit, large size. The classic XXL version.
Why choose the 'Crissie'? Its wavy fronds create a more dynamic graphic effect than the classic Asplenium nidus, without being as pronounced as the 'Crispy Wave' — the elegant middle ground between texture and lightness.
Exposure & location
The Asplenium 'Crissie' enjoys partial shade with soft indirect light — it tolerates low light better than most ferns, making it a solid option for dimly lit rooms.
- Exposure: Partial shade, soft indirect light — tolerates low light.
- Ideal: bathroom, office, bedroom, living room, or low-light room.
- Temperature: 18 to 24 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, rich, and well-draining — fern or green plant potting soil with perlite.
The bathroom is its ideal location — the room’s natural humidity replicates its original habitat and reduces the need for misting.
Watering & care
The Asplenium 'Crissie' likes a substrate that is slightly moist at all times, never waterlogged. Its main sensitivity point: never water directly into the center of the rosette — water around the base to avoid rot.
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate slightly moist without soaking.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring and summer, slightly reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60 to 80% humidity — mist regularly or place near a humidifier.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer with a liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half.
- Cleaning: gently remove dead or yellowing fronds at the base.
New fronds emerge curled from the center of the rosette and slowly unfurl — it’s fascinating to watch. Avoid touching them: they are very fragile at this stage.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its shiny green wavy fronds bring a touch of tropical freshness and graphic elegance — a decorative plant that needs nothing else to stand out.
- In combination: pair it with a Spathiphyllum for a complete air-purifying arrangement, or with the Asplenium + Spathiphyllum + Epipremnum purifier trio — all three enjoy Partial shade and humidity.
- Ideal pot: a white ceramic decorative pot with relief highlights the shiny green of the fronds without competing with their texture.
- Ambiance: perfect as an accent plant in a bright bathroom, office, or living room — its rosette shape creates a naturally structured focal point.
The wavy fronds create a spectacular play of shadows and light — especially visible with natural or artificial side lighting.
Verdeia tips
- High humidity, watering at the base — regularly mist the foliage but always water around the base, never in the center of the rosette. Stagnant water in the center quickly causes irreversible rot of the central bud.
- Brown frond tips indicate air that is too dry — double the misting frequency or place the pot on a saucer filled with moist clay pebbles. During winter heating, dry apartment air is the main enemy of this fern.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring — in a slightly larger pot with fresh substrate. Growth is moderate — no need to repot too often, Asplenium likes to be slightly root-bound.
- Air-purifying and non-toxic — Asplenium absorbs formaldehyde and xylene present in indoor air and poses no risk to cats, dogs, or children. A rare combination that makes it a top choice for homes with pets. Find our complete analysis on plants and air quality.
