Frequently Asked Questions
Can you water an Asplenium in the center of its rosette? No — stagnant water in the heart of the rosette causes the young central shoots to rot; always water around the edge of the pot and let the water soak in gradually.
Is the Asplenium Parvati suitable for a bathroom? Yes, it's actually the ideal spot — the natural humidity after showers perfectly replicates its tropical habitat conditions and keeps the lacy fronds fresh and dense without extra misting.

🌿 Finely cut and lace-like fronds • ☀️ Soft indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 🌫️ Likes humidity • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 5 sizes available
The Asplenium nidus 'Parvati', also known as the bird's nest fern, is a tropical epiphytic fern native to the humid forests of Asia. Unlike other Asplenium with smooth and wavy fronds, the 'Parvati' variety features tender green foliage that is finely cut and lace-like, forming an airy and very light rosette — an almost lace effect that brings a unique softness and poetry to contemporary interiors.
Non-toxic to pets, it is one of the safest and most decorative indoor ferns in the fern collection — and one of the few perfectly suited for low-light spaces in homes with pets.
Which Asplenium variety to choose?
The Asplenium genus offers several very distinct shapes — all bird's nest ferns, but with very different textures:
- Asplenium 'Parvati' (this plant) — finely cut and lace-like tender green fronds, airy and delicate rosette. The lightest and most poetic in the range.
- Asplenium Nidus — large smooth bright apple green fronds, classic nest rosette. The choice for lush and very shiny foliage.
- Asplenium Crispy Wave — spectacular wavy fronds, compact shiny green foliage. The choice for a very structured wavy graphic.
- Asplenium Crissie — wavy and crisped fronds, very pronounced texture. The choice for an even more pronounced texture.
- Asplenium Antiquum — thicker and stiffer fronds, shiny dark green, upright habit. The choice for a more robust and architectural silhouette.
- Asplenium Osaka — slightly crisped wavy fronds, compact habit. The choice for a more compact intermediate size.
- Asplenium Campio — large wide and wavy fronds, XXL size. The choice for maximum volume in a large space.
Light & placement
The Asplenium 'Parvati' prefers soft and stable indirect light — its finely cut fronds are particularly sensitive to direct sun, which quickly burns and discolors them. It is one of the ferns best suited for bathrooms and spaces with high ambient humidity.
- Light: soft indirect to partial shade — north or east-facing window, bright room without direct sunlight.
- Ideal locations: bright bathroom, bedroom, dim living room, office — anywhere with naturally present humidity.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
Group the Asplenium 'Parvati' with other tropical plants — plants that transpire together create a naturally humid microclimate beneficial for its delicate fronds, without extra misting effort.
Watering & care
The Asplenium 'Parvati' prefers a substrate that is constantly slightly moist — unlike succulents or tropical plants with rhizomes, it does not tolerate letting the substrate dry out completely. The moisture-watering balance for tropical ferns is detailed in our article on the light-humidity balance of indoor plants.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring-summer — keep the substrate slightly moist at all times.
- Where to water: always around the rosette, never directly in the center — stagnant water in the heart of the rosette causes rot.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and clay pebbles at the bottom.
- Humidity: ideally 60 to 70% — mist daily in dry interiors, especially in winter.
- Fertilizer: a liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted once a month in spring and summer.
Remove damaged fronds at the base as soon as they yellow — a yellowed frond never greens again and consumes energy from new central shoots.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The lace-like lightness of the Asplenium 'Parvati' makes it an ideal contrast plant — it brings softness and airiness to any tropical composition with more structured foliage, as suggested by our guide on plants for low-light spaces.
- For a fern composition with very contrasting textures, pair the Asplenium 'Parvati' with an Asplenium Crispy Wave — the finely lace-like fronds of the Parvati contrast with the large wavy and structured fronds of the Crispy Wave for a visually rich fern duo in the same green palette.
- For a very soft tropical composition in partial shade, pair it with a Maranta Fascinator and a Calathea warscewiczii — the lace-like lightness of the Asplenium visually lightens the graphic and dense foliage of the two Marantaceae.
- In a beige or natural terracotta decorative pot, the organic and warm tones of the raw ceramic complement the delicacy of the tender green foliage — choose a matte untreated ceramic decorative pot for a natural and authentic look.
- In a bright bathroom, place the Asplenium 'Parvati' on a low piece of furniture or shelf — the natural humidity after showers exactly reproduces the conditions of its tropical habitat and keeps the fine and lace-like fronds healthy without extra misting effort.
Verdeia Tips
- Never water directly in the center of the rosette: stagnant water in the heart of the plant quickly causes rot of the young central shoots — always water around the edge, around the pot, letting the water gradually soak down to the roots.
- Mist daily in heated interiors: the Asplenium 'Parvati' is particularly sensitive to dry air — its fine and lace-like fronds brown at the tips much faster than the thick fronds of other Asplenium, making regular misting essential in winter.
- Repot every 2 years in spring in a substrate rich in organic matter: a mix of fern potting soil enriched with perlite ensures drainage while maintaining the moisture the roots need — our guide on repotting indoor plants details the steps.
