Frequently Asked Questions
What pruning should be applied to a Clematis Nubia Boulevard? The 'Nubia' is a group 2 — prune lightly in March by removing dead stems above a strong bud, then prune moderately after each flowering to encourage regrowth.
Can the Clematis Nubia grow in a pot on a balcony? Yes, that is actually its primary purpose — designed in the Boulevard series for pot cultivation, it blooms from the first year in a deep, well-drained container exposed to gentle sun or partial shade.

🔴 Large deep purple red flowers from June to September • 🌿 Flowering from ground to top from the first year • 🌤️ Soft sun / Partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis 'Nubia' is a compact clematis originating from Europe (United Kingdom), bred by Raymond Evison and presented at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2018 in the Boulevard series. Its large star-shaped deep purple red flowers 12 to 15 cm, striped with lighter red on each tepal, bloom massively along the entire height of the stem — from the ground to the top. Available for balconies, terraces, and pergolas, it is specifically designed for pot cultivation.
Very flowering, very hardy and easy to maintain, it is one of the clematis that performs best in pot — it flowers from the first year and stands out for its continuous remontant flowering throughout the summer.
Which clematis to choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection covers all flowering seasons and all colors. Here is how to place 'Nubia' among the varieties in the catalog:
- Clematis 'Nubia' (this plant) — large deep purple red flowers, continuous flowering from June to September, compact habit ideal in pot. The most remontant and flowering red variety.
- Clematis 'Niobe' — large deep ruby red flowers, flowering from June to September. The classic red version, more vigorous for covering a large area.
- Clematis 'Jackmanii' — large purple violet flowers, massive summer flowering from July to September. The most vigorous for covering a large pergola.
- Clematis 'Multi Blue' — large double bluish violet flowers, two flowerings per year. The most spectacular and compact variety in blue.
- Clematis 'The President' — large deep violet flowers, continuous flowering from May to October. The classic sure bet with a very long season.
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' — large white flowers with red stamens, elegant spring bloom. The choice for a very pure white combination early in the season.
Exposure & location
The 'Nubia' follows the golden rule of clematis: head in the sun, foot in the shade. Designed for pot cultivation, it adapts to all container sizes and performs best in a sunny to partial shade spot, protected from strong winds that weaken stems. Its special feature: it blooms from bottom to top — no stem is "lost."
- Exposure: gentle sun or partial shade — ideal facing east or west, sheltered from winds.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, arch, or pergola — its petiole tendrils cling by themselves.
- Soil: fresh, fertile, well-drained — tolerates limestone.
- In pot: deep container with surface mulching to keep roots cool.
To protect roots without mulching, place a flat slate or some stones on the soil in front of the base of the pot — this is the simplest method to keep roots cool on a paved terrace exposed to sun.
Watering & maintenance
The 'Nubia' is a group 2 clematis — it blooms on last year's shoots and new shoots, allowing it to flower again in summer. A good spring restart and consistently moist soil are enough to maintain continuous flowering. If leaves turn yellow, check watering and fertilization levels.
- Watering: keep soil moist — never let it dry out completely, especially in pot in summer.
- Pruning: group 2 — light pruning in March (remove dead stems and trim above a bud); moderate pruning after the first bloom to encourage reblooming.
- Fertilizer: granules for flowering plants in spring and after the first bloom.
- Mulching: 5 to 8 cm at the base to keep the roots cool.
- Propagation: by semi-woody stem cuttings in summer.
After the first flowering in June, prune the faded stems back to the first visible healthy bud — this action systematically triggers the second wave of red flowers from late August to September.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep crimson red of the 'Nubia' is one of the warmest and most dramatic colors in the climbers catalog. It naturally pairs with whites, creams, and dark foliage for a very romantic green terrace.
- For a very classic red and white duo, the Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' persistent white dresses the base of the support all year — its permanent shiny green foliage and fragrant white summer flowers create a sober and very readable contrast with the deep red of the 'Nubia'.
- For a very warm red and pink combination, the Climbing Rose Crazy in Love 'Pink' bright pink naturally pairs with the 'Nubia' on the same pergola — the two remontant climbers alternate and overlap in complementary colors from June to the first frosts.
- To extend the season with a scent as a bonus, the Lonicera 'Belgica' red and cream scented blooms from May to July before the 'Nubia' takes over — the two climbers cover the support from May to September with complementary atmospheres.
- To enhance the red in pot on a terrace, the pot Elho Greenville round white creates the most readable color contrast — the neutral white amplifies the brightness of the crimson flowers and matches all terrace styles.
'Nubia' is one of the few clematis that flowers from base to top — place it on a support visible along its entire height rather than hidden against a wall, to enjoy the curtain effect of red flowers along the whole stem.
Verdeia tips
- Prune after the first flowering to trigger repeat flowering: 'Nubia' is repeat-flowering — cutting back faded stems to the first healthy bud after June systematically triggers a second wave of red flowers in August-September, without which the plant would not flower again.
- Mulch generously at the base from planting: 6 to 8 cm of organic mulch keeps the roots cool and produces much more abundant flowering — this is the most cost-effective step for this variety whose roots are particularly sensitive to summer heat in a pot.
- Spread the stems fanwise on the support from the start: 'Nubia' flowers along the entire length of the stems, not just at the top — a horizontal or fanwise arrangement from planting maximizes the visible flowering surface and creates a dense curtain of flowers rather than a concentrated bouquet at the top.
