Frequently Asked Questions
Why is it said that clematis wants its roots in the shade and its head in the sun? The foliage needs light to bloom, but the roots are very sensitive to heat and dryness — shaded roots with mulch or a ground cover plant ensure abundant and long-lasting flowering.
Does the 'Multi Blue' clematis grow well in a pot on a balcony? Yes, it is actually one of the clematis varieties best suited for pots thanks to its compact growth of 2 to 3 m and its tolerance for partial shade, ideal for balconies facing east or west.

💙 Two bloom periods per year — May-June then August-September • 🌸 Large double violet-blue flowers with silver backs • 🌤️ Soft sun / Partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis 'Multi Blue' is a climbing clematis native to the Netherlands, originating from a natural mutation of the 'The President' variety. It stands out for its large double violet-blue flowers with silver backs measuring 10 to 14 cm in diameter, and for its rare feature: two bloom periods per year, in spring and late summer. A compact and spectacular climber for urban balconies, terraces, and pergolas.
Vigorous, Very hardy and suitable for pots, it is one of the most elegant outdoor climbers to dress a vertical support with minimal space.
Which clematis to choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection brings together climbers for all exposures and colors. Here’s how to place 'Multi Blue' among the varieties in the catalog:
- Clematis 'Multi Blue' (this plant) — large double violet-blue flowers, two bloom periods per year. The most spectacular and compact variety.
- Clematis 'The President' — large simple deep purple flowers, abundant bloom from May to October. The classic reliable and very vigorous variety.
- Clematis 'Jackmanii' — intense purple flowers, massive summer bloom from July to September. The most vigorous for covering a large pergola.
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' — large white flowers with red stamens, elegant spring bloom. The choice for a very pure white and green combination.
- Clematis 'Niobe' — large deep ruby red flowers, blooming from June to September. The intense red version for maximum contrast with a white rose.
- Clematis armandii — small fragrant white flowers from March, evergreen foliage all year round. The only evergreen clematis in the catalog, ideal for covering a wall in any season.
Exposure & location
The 'Multi Blue' follows the golden rule of clematis: head in the sun, feet in the shade. The foliage needs light to bloom generously, but the roots, very sensitive to heat, must stay cool. Thick mulch or a ground cover plant at the base is enough to create these conditions, even on a sunny balcony.
- Exposure: gentle sun or partial shade — ideal facing east or west.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, arch, or pergola — its petiole tendrils cling on their own.
- Soil: fresh, fertile, well-drained — tolerates limestone.
- In pots: large deep container with surface mulch to keep roots cool.
If the base is exposed to direct sun, simply place a slate or flat stone on the ground in front of it — this is the simplest way to keep the roots cool without ground cover plants.
Watering & care
The 'Multi Blue' is undemanding as long as its roots never dry out completely. Pruning is the key to getting two bloom cycles: light pruning after the first cycle triggers the second wave of flowers in late summer. Regular fertilizing from spring and a good post-winter restart make all the difference in flower density.
- Watering: keep soil consistently moist — never let it dry out completely, especially in pots.
- Pruning: light after the first bloom (June) — remove faded stems down to the first pair of healthy leaves.
- Rejuvenation pruning: in February-March, remove thin or dried branches while keeping the strongest ones.
- Fertilizer: granules for flowering plants in spring and after the first bloom.
- Mulching: 5 to 8 cm at the base, essential to keep the roots cool.
Do not prune too short after the first bloom — shortening to the first pair of healthy leaves is enough and preserves the wood that will bear the flowers of the second wave.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep violet-blue of the 'Multi Blue' creates striking color harmonies with reds, whites, and creams. For a green and romantic terrace, it is the most refined climber in the catalog.
- For a very dramatic blue-violet and red duo, the Crazy in Love 'Red' Rose in velvet red is the ideal companion on the same trellis — the warm/cool contrast between intense red and violet-blue is the classic combination for romantic pergolas.
- For a very soft blue and pink combination, the Crazy in Love 'Pink' Rose offers a bright two-tone harmony — the large pink rose flowers and the double bluish clematis flowers alternate throughout the season.
- For a very elegant lasting backdrop all year round, the Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' white permanently dresses the bottom of the wall — its glossy evergreen foliage highlights the bluish flowers of the clematis without competing with its bloom.
- To enhance the potted blue on a terrace, the Capi Nature Groove taupe pot adds a mineral and natural note that amplifies the deep violet-blue of the flowers — the matte and organic contrast of the pot creates a very elegant frame for this precious variety.
Pair 'Multi Blue' with an early spring blooming clematis like Clematis armandii — this way you cover the season from March to September with two climbers on the same support.
Verdeia tips
- Mulch generously at the base from planting: 6 to 8 cm of organic mulch keeps roots cool and triggers much more abundant blooms — this is the most cost-effective step for this variety whose roots are especially sensitive to summer heat.
- Guide the stems by spreading them out from the start: clematis petiole-tendrils cling on their own, but early spreading of stems across the entire trellis surface ensures dense, even coverage rather than a cluster concentrated at the top of the support.
- Prune lightly in June to encourage the second bloom: without this pruning, the plant focuses its energy on seed formation rather than new buds — a quick cut right after the first bloom always triggers the second wave in late August.
