Frequently Asked Questions
What exposure is best for a purple clematis in a pot on a balcony? A balcony facing east or west is ideal — the 'Jackmanii' likes light without harsh midday sun, and its roots should stay cool with surface mulching.
Can a clematis and a climbing rose be grown on the same support? Yes, it’s actually a classic combination — the rose blooms first from June to July, then the clematis takes over until September, providing a continuous succession of colors.

💜 Purple violet bloom from July to September • 🌿 Very vigorous and floriferous • 🌤️ Soft sun / Partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis 'Jackmanii' is a climbing clematis native to Europe (United Kingdom), considered the first modern large-flowered hybrid clematis. Its large star-shaped deep purple violet flowers, 10 to 13 cm, bloom massively from July to September on the current year’s shoots. A classic and timeless climber for urban balconies, terraces, and pergolas.
Very vigorous, Very hardy and easy to prune, it’s one of the most reliable outdoor climbers in the catalog — generous, healthy, and faithful year after year.
Which clematis to choose?
The Verdeia clematis collection covers all blooming seasons and all colors. Here’s how to place 'Jackmanii' among the catalog varieties:
- Clematis 'Jackmanii' (this plant) — large purple violet flowers, summer bloom from July to September. The most vigorous for covering a large area.
- Clematis 'Multi Blue' — large double bluish violet flowers, two bloom periods per year (May-June then August-September). The most spectacular and compact variety.
- Clematis 'The President' — large simple deep violet flowers, continuous bloom from May to October. The classic reliable variety with a very long season.
- Clematis 'Niobe' — large deep ruby red flowers, blooming from June to September. The choice for maximum red contrast on a pergola or white wall.
- Clematis 'Miss Bateman' — large white flowers with red stamens, elegant spring bloom. The choice for a very pure white combination early in the season.
- Clematis armandii — small fragrant white flowers from March, evergreen foliage all year round. The only evergreen clematis in the catalog.
Exposure & location
The 'Jackmanii' follows the golden rule of clematis: head in the sun, feet in the shade. Very adaptable, it tolerates both gentle full sun and partial shade — only intense midday sun can limit its flowering.
- Exposure: gentle sun or partial shade — ideal facing east, west, or south without glare.
- Support: trellis, wire mesh, arch, or pergola — its tendril petioles cling by themselves.
- Soil: fresh, fertile, well-drained — tolerates limestone.
- In pots: large deep container with surface mulch to keep roots cool.
To protect the base without ground cover plants, simply place a flat slate on the soil in front of the base — this is the simplest method to keep roots cool on a balcony or paved terrace.
Watering & care
The 'Jackmanii' blooms on this year’s growth — winter pruning is therefore the most important step to ensure abundant flowering. A good spring restart and consistently moist soil are enough to trigger generous blooms from July to September. Be careful not to over-fertilize: excess fertilizer encourages foliage at the expense of flowers.
- Watering: keep soil moist — never let it dry out completely, especially in pots during summer.
- Pruning: cut all stems back to 15-30 cm from the ground in March-April, above strong buds.
- Fertilizer: light application of pellets for flowering plants in spring only — never in excess.
- Mulching: 5 to 8 cm at the base to keep the roots cool.
- Training: tie the young stems to the support as they grow.
The 'Jackmanii' blooms exclusively on the current year’s shoots — a severe pruning in March is not a risk but a necessity to achieve dense and even flowering across the entire support.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The deep purple of the 'Jackmanii' is one of the garden’s most versatile colors — it pairs well with warm reds and pinks as well as cool whites and creams. For a green and romantic terrace, it is the perfect base for a vertical composition.
- For a very passionate purple and red duo, the Crazy in Love 'Red' rose in velvet red is the ideal companion on the same trellis — the warm contrast between deep purple and rich red creates a very dramatic and romantic composition.
- For a very elegant purple and white combination, the Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' evergreen white jasmine dresses the lower part of the wall all year round — the shiny green foliage and summer white flowers of the star jasmine create a very clear contrast with the deep purple clematis.
- To extend the season with a bonus fragrance, the Lonicera 'Belgica' in red and cream blooms from May to July before the 'Jackmanii' takes over — the two climbers thus cover the support from May to September with two distinct atmospheres.
- To enhance the purple potted plant on a terrace, the Elho Greenville round white pot creates the clearest color contrast for this intense shade — the neutral white of the pot amplifies the brightness of the deep purple flowers.
Pair the 'Jackmanii' with a climbing rose that blooms in spring — the rose flowers from June to July before the clematis takes over, providing a continuous succession of colors on the same support.
Verdeia tips
- Prune short every spring without hesitation: cutting all stems back to 15-30 cm from the ground in March triggers vigorous regrowth and much denser flowering than on an unpruned plant — this is the most important step for this variety, which blooms exclusively on new shoots.
- Spread the stems evenly over the entire support from the start: the petiole tendrils cling by themselves but without guidance the stems grow tall and leave the base of the support bare — a fan-shaped arrangement at planting ensures dense and even coverage from bottom to top.
- Limit fertilizer applications to a single spring dose: excess fertilizer encourages leaf growth at the expense of flowers — a single light application of slow-release granules in March is enough for abundant flowering all summer.
